Cool Song of the Week #2 (Mar. 8, 2000)
It is time for you to answer the question everyone wants to know, Slater.
What this week's Cool Song of the Week is?
No! What we want to know is if you've ever seen "Showgirls"?
I think that this week's "Cool Song" is pretty neat. It's probably John Paul Jone's finest recorded performance!
But what about Elizabeth Berkley? Was "Showgirls" her finest recorded performance? I think so!
"Carouselambra", preppie! What a song! From the opening moments to the ending fade out, "Carouselambra" is full of beautiful, fascinating music.
Lord knows I feel the same way about "Showgirls".... oh yes.
Back at Bayside High, I used to listen to "Carouselambra" before state wrestling matches. The driving force of the rhythm would always pump me up! And you may be surprised to hear this, but Kelly Kapowski was a huge Zeppelin fan.
What about Jessie Spano? Did she listen to Zeppelin when she was filming "Showgirls"?
Jessie? Nah. She and Lisa seemed to prefer stuff like the Backstreet Boyz. But Kelly used to point out all of John Paul Jones' genius all the time... especially on this song! I was devastated when she left me for Zack. We used to listen to that amazing bassline! Jones could have easily just used his foot pedals, or a synth bass like on "No Quarter", but not this time, Webster. A frenzy of notes up through the middle section, it's da bomb up until the middle section!
What happens in the middle section?
JPJ slows the song down a bit, and adds a glorious, majestic melody. Jimmmy Page carries this part with his famous Doubleneck guitar, but Jones plays a pretty background. He then emerges from this with a discoy dance rhythm which slowly fades to funk! It's totally awesome!
Sounds neat, Slater.
It is! The whole funky ending would occur about the time me and Kelly would start making out.
Are you ever going to tell me what you thought of "Showgirls"?
Dude, what's your deal with Jessie being in that dirty dirty movie?
Dude, what's YOUR deal with John Paul Jones?
He rocks! And this week's Cool Song of the Week, "Carouselambra", is all the proof you need!
Well, so does Elizabeth Berkley, and "Showgirls" is all the proof you need.
You're a sad little man.
