"The Maori"

Builders No: 227 Year Built: 1884 Weight: 10 tonnes Horse Power: 7
Arrived in New Zealand on 21 October 1884 and used in the Reefton area until
being dumped in 1940. It lay in the Snowy River until the mid 1970's and was
taken to canterbury for restoration. The retoration was aided with the help
of Heron's Steam Museum founder Frank Heron. Once restored "The
Maori" was rallied extensivley from 1979 to 1983 in the Canterbury area.
During the restoration the original Mclaren boiler was scrapped as it was deemed too expensive to repair. The replacement boiler came of Aveiling & Porter 4874, and was built in 1902. In September 2002 McLaren 227 was the oldest traction engine presant at a raly, which marked the 125th anniversary of John & Henery McLaren producing their first traction engine. Currently "The Maori" is steamable and can be seen occasionally operating.
