Excerpts from Articles by Frank Shapiro************************ "Zambia and the Fischer Clan" "There is only one book devoted to the history of the Jews in Zambia..." Article by Charlotte Halle in Haaretz, February 11, 2005 ____________________________________________ "Not Uganda or Israel, but Uganda and Israel" On-line article appearing in: Current Viewpoint10 June, 2004In 1903, the British Colonial
Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain, offered Theodor Herzl, the founder of the
World Zionist Movement, a homeland for the Jews in Uganda. Thus for the
first time in two thousand years, the Jewish people had been presented
with actual collective political power. Had Herzl firmly grasped this
offer, the dimensions of the Holocaust, the destiny of the State of
Israel, and the scale and form of the Middle Eastern conflict would have
been dramatically different. “Zion in Africa” could have been the motor
propelling Jewish destiny toward a more promising and auspicious future. ____________________________________________
"Malcolm MacDonald & the Jewish Refugees" Feature article appearing in: History ScotlandVolume 4 No.3 May/June 2004This article charts the colonial policy difficulties and
humanitarian dilemmas that faced the newly appointed Colonial secretary,
Malcolm Macdonald prior to World War II. Astonishing plans have now been
uncovered which aimed at saving considerable numbers of Jews and
resettling them in safety. And Malcolm MacDonald was at the forefront of
these plans of deliverance. ____________________________________________ "The Security-Fence Paradox" Article appearing in: Jerusalem PostMarch. 21, 2004Israel is currently erecting a security barrier against terrorist incursions. Paradoxically, Israelis have always considered fence-wall barriers as anathema. This distaste for walls emanated from the Ghetto experience. A Ghetto mentality evolved, which has survived intact, although consciously suppressed. In its determination to annul the Ghetto Jew, Israel set out to deliberately create the “New Jew” and the “New Society”. Unwittingly, the Ghetto gene persisted. By sealing all its neighboring hostile borders, the minute state of Israel, at its very inception, became a fenced-in ghetto-state. Had this information been leaked countless lives would have been saved. In the final analysis, full responsibility for suppressing the information lay with the committee. When the planning stages reached the moment of decision key members of the committee downplayed the plans' worth and effectiveness. The decision to procrastinate and abort every single proposed plan lay with the committee. Why conceal this information when it could have saved so many lives? ____________________________________________ "Rediscovering Malcolm MacDonald"A synopsis of an article appearing in:The Round TableThe Commonwealth Journal of International AffairsIssue 369 April 2003Research into declassified government files casts new
light on the former British Colonial Secretary Malcolm MacDonald.
For more than fifty years, MacDonald's memory has been tainted with his
assumed notorious association with the dismal 1939 White Paper on
Palestine, which blocked Jewish emigration from Nazi Europe to
Palestine. However, this policy in no way reflected MacDonald's ethical
and moral reasoning. Although thwarted by his government's policy to
settle Jewish refugees in Palestine he sought to redress this course of
action by resettling them in Northern Rhodesia in southern Africa. Now,
finally and posthumously, the complete and balanced profile has emerged:
MacDonald, was a man of virtue and conscience.
____________________________________________ "The Real Malcolm MacDonald" A synopsis of an article appearing in:The Jerusalem ReportApril 21, 2003After 60 years, a call for the rehabilitation of the British minister notoriously associated with barring Jews from entering Palestine to escape the Nazis. Malcolm MacDonald carried the responsibility for British warships intercepting vessels arriving at Palestine's shores with their illegal human cargo and returning them to the Nazis - although, in fact, he was one minister in a coalition applying a policy supported by a broad consensus of Neville Chamberlain's government. However, one important theme runs through revealed document files: the part played by MacDonald in endeavoring to rescue Jewish refugees and settle them en masse in Northern Rhodesia. ____________________________________________
"Not To Zambia!" Article and Interview appearing in:The Israeli Maariv newspaper in HebrewApril 18, 2003At at time when the Jews of Nazi-occupied Europe were pleading for visas; when the ship St. Louis overloaded with refugees attempted in vain to unload its human cargo at numerous ports, plans for relocating the refugees in Northern Rhodesia were being examined. Shapiro's recent book Haven in Africa attempts to undermine the assumption that on the eve of the Holocaust every door in the world was locked to the Jews. Shapiro claims that some half million Jews could have escaped death. Instead only 250 souls found their way to Northern Rhodesia. (Mordechai Chaimovitch).
____________________________________________ "Blemish on Anglo-Jewish Leadership" Article and Interview appearing in:Jewish TelegraphFebruary 28, 2003The Holocaust could have been so different if more Jews knew of Africa plan! Shapiro reveals that in 1941, 5,000 non-Jewish Poles fled to Northern Rhodesia and settled there legally. ''At least 100,000 Jews could have been saved,'' he said. ''The whole face of the Holocaust could have been changed. What would have happened? The course of history would be different. Would there be an Israel? Would there be a Palestine? Would there be two Jewish homelands?'' ____________________________________________ |
