He showed up all wet
On the rainy front step
Wearing shrapnel in his skin
And the war he saw
Lives inside him still
It's so hard to be gentle and warm

The journey to Cosmo Canyon was going to be a long one. Although ferries and boats now traveled between continents regularly, Vincent knew that if anyone recognized or remembered Sephiroth, things would turn from bad to ugly quickly. So he decided to simply walk as far as he could before having to charter passage.

Sephiroth proved to be enlightening conversation, although he was somewhat naive of the world around him due to the gaps in his memory and his limited upbringing. Vincent did his best to explain things to him, but there were certain questions that he knew Sephiroth would eventually ask... he just wanted to make sure he had the time to think up the answers.

"Father..." Sephiroth began hesitantly, walking a few steps behind Vincent as he always did.

"Don’t call me that... I told you that I am not your father... Your father was Hojo."

"I know that... but you loved my mother, and Hojo did not. For all intensive purposes, you should have been my father... Besides, Hojo is dead."

"Regardless... I don’t want you thinking or believing that a monster such as I could be your father. I am not worthy of such a title."

"From what you have told me, I myself am a monster, as was the man who was my biological father. In this puzzle that is made up of monsters, does it really matter what we consider ourselves to be?"

"I suppose not... But as I said, I am not worthy of the title... My sin, as I told you, was to not stop that insane plan before it got underway... I let the one woman I loved more than life itself go ahead with Hojo’s crazy plans and insane dreams. Then Hojo created what you see before you... this twisted creature. My final sin was that I could not stop you from threatening the planet."

"But then, why was I re-created father? For what purpose was I brought into this world?"

"Those scientists... they believed that Mako was not dead, and that somehow, your re-birth could bring them a utopia... No doubt they read something about the "Promise Land" from Hojo’s notes... They never knew that the Promise Land was not to be had by men such as themselves."

"Then my life has no meaning?"

"No... all life has meaning, purpose... It is simply for you to decide and create for yourself. That is something I cannot teach you Sephiroth... It is something that we have to experience for ourselves."

"Hmm... what was my mother like? My real mother, Lucretia..."

Vincent sighed heavily, "She was one of the purest, most beautiful of women that I had ever known... It was with deep regret and sadness that I watched her return to the planet from my arms. She was a woman of strong ideals and stronger faith. She was smitten by Hojo for his brillance, his lofty dreams... She got caught up in his words and wanted to bring about a new era of mankind... that was why she volunteered to have you."

"Why did she have to die? She was so young, you said..."

"The Mako that was introduced into her body was given at frequent intervals in high dosages... Even though it was concentrated mainly in her abdomen and womb, it still seeped through her body over time... It was a slow poisoning that might have been cured. But she died mainly of a broken heart... For Hojo changed during the time in which you were developing in Lucretia’s womb... By the time you were born, she was not even allowed to see you, or hold you, or even know how you were doing. To the scientists, you were a product of an experiment... and she was unauthorized personnel."

Vincent continued walking, waiting for Sephiroth to say something. But he was silent. Then he noticed that Sephiroth’s footsteps had stopped. Turning around, Vincent noticed that Sephiroth’s head was down, and as he looked closer, Vincent saw what he thought was impossible... tears. Tears fell from the great Sephiroth’s cheeks and landed at his feet.

Taking a step closer, Sephiroth’s head slowly rose up. Touching his face, he looked at his hands in confusion, and then looked at Vincent and said, "Why...? Why was she taken from me, I never even knew her...? And why am I crying? I was always told that soldiers do not cry... but there is a pain I cannot describe... here." Sephiroth put his hand over his heart. "I would have given anything to have seen her once... I do not even know what she looked like... Only a vision in my mind’s eye from the stories you have woven for me... thank you, father."

Vincent put his hand on Sephiroth’s shoulder and said, "Cloud was wrong... There is more hope for you than anyone will ever know, Sephiroth... For a man like you to feel again, to cry... means that there is world waiting for you, and a life that is waiting to be lived."

Vincent watched as Sephiroth nodded, and then he gave in to deep weeping. Unable to do anything but watch, Vincent slowly patted Sephiroth again, and turned his back so that he could give Sephiroth some measure of privacy. Almost smiling to himself, Vincent whispered, "You were so wrong Cloud... Lucretia my love... your son is alive... I wish I could have told you... but it took 14 years for it to happen... I only hope that my sins will all be atoned for someday, and that you and I will rest in peace together..."

Finally, Sephiroth stopped sobbing and said with a resolved voice, "Very well... As you said, there is a life out there for me... And I am not going to lose it like I lost mother... I am going to find my life, and live it to the fullest!"

Turning his head, Vincent glanced at Sephiroth from over his shoulder. Then he nodded to his ‘son’ and said, "Then prepare youself... We will be arriving in Cosmo Canyon by tomorrow..."

*** *** ***

Just as Vincent had predicted, he and Sephiroth reached Cosmo Canyon by the middle of the next day. The sun beat down on them, making Vincent sluggish, and so the two travellers finally stopped and sought shelter under a clump of trees. But as luck would have it, they didn’t need to travel any further, for after a little while, a great red beast with a tail of fire came running by, screeching to a halt at the sight of Vincent and Sephiroth. His one good eye widened a bit at seeing Sephiroth, but he said nothing about it and merely tossed his head in greeting at the two men.

"Red XIII. Just the one I was looking for," said Vincent wearily.

Red swished his tail a little and sat down. "I see... Is this about... Sephiroth?"

"Sephiroth, can you give us a moment alone please?" With a nod, Sephiroth stood up and walked around to the other side of the trees, then climbed up and surveyed the dusty canyon like an eagle. Vincent watched him go, then turned to Red and said, "I have a favor to ask of you, and yes, it concerns Sephiroth."

"And what would that be?"

"Do you think he would be alright if I left him here? I mean, if Cosmo Canyon were to become his home?"

Red thought about it for a minute, then said, "I’m sorry Vincent. Although I have no problem with your request, I can’t guarantee his safety. So he may stay if he likes, and I will do my best to help, but my primary concern is Cosmo Canyon..." The beast sighed and looked off in the distance, where his father stood, guarding the canyon for eternity. "Like my father, Seto, I am the guardian of this Canyon... I hope you understand, Vincent."

"Yes. And I appreciate your honesty - I cannot ask for anything more. I must rest until I regain some of my strength, and then we will be off."

"And where will you be going to? I assume you’ve been traveling together then?"

Vincent stroked his chin. "I think Kalm... isn’t that where Barret lives?"

"Yes, he moved back after living in North Corel for several years..." Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of footsteps, softly muffled against the thick sand. Another beast, slightly smaller than Red XIII, came running up and stopped abruptly at the sight of Red and Vincent.

"Nanaki? A visitor?"

Red nosed her gently and tossed his head at Vincent. "Vincent, I’d like you to meet Koneko, my mate. And Koneko, this is Vincent Valentine, one of my old companions."

"A pleasure," she said softly, sitting down on her haunches with a graceful swish of her fire-tipped tail.

"Your mate? So there are more of your kind, Red?"

Red gave him the barest of nods. "Yes, but only a few... we are a dying breed, but certainly that is preferable to being extinct." And Vincent understood. This was why Sephiroth couldn’t stay... Red had his own people to take care of... certainly, he didn’t need one more body to watch over and
worry about.

"Well then, thank you for your time Red. But I think it’s best that we move on. Sephiroth!" he called, and the trees rustled slightly as the swordsman leaped down with feline ease. "Let’s go, to Kalm."

The rain was falling lightly the day Vincent and Sephiroth walked into Kalm, a small town not too far from what used to be Midgar. Both men were wearing waterproof hooded capes and they drifted, silently, like shadows, through the streets of town until they reached a unremarkable house towards the south end of town.

"Stay here," Vincent gruffly ordered Sephiroth as he climbed up the porch steps and walked around to the front door, where he lightly rapped on the door until a voice called out, "Hey, I’m comin! Hold on, hold on..." and finally, Barret Wallace opened the door. He was still as physically imposing as he had always been, a big man, and still hard as steel.

Giving Vincent a quick once over, he swung open the door and said, "Come on in! Whatcha doin’
here in such bad weather anyhow? I tell ya, the storm should be gettin’ worse later on - lucky you weren’t caught in it!"

Vincent politely wiped his feet on the doormat and stepped in. "Barret. You look well."

"And you haven’t changed a bit," the bigger man rumbled. "Here, have a seat and tell me ‘bout what you’ve been up to lately. I heard there was trouble in Midgar, but..." He was interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs, and a few moments later, a young woman in a blue dress floated down.

*Aerith? No, but she looks so much like her,* thought Vincent as he looked over the young lady. She had long brown hair tied up in a high ponytail, straight bangs, and wide, friendly brown eyes.

"I see you have a visitor, Daddy," she said pleasantly, then swept down the stairs and offered Vincent her hand, her eyes flickering momentarily over Vincent’s mechanical left arm.

"I’m Marlene Wallace. It’s a pleasure."

"Vincent Valentine."

Marlene’s eyes widened a little. "Oh? Daddy’s told me a little about his adventures with you." She gave him a slight curtsy, then asked Vincent, "May I get you something to drink? Tea, perhaps?"

Vincent considered her offer for a moment, then gave her a slight nod. She beamed and ran off into the kitchen, calling out over her shoulder, "It’ll be just a minute then!"

"She’s grown a lot since then," said Barret a little wistfully. "So, Vince, what’re you doin’ around here anyhow?"

*** *** ***

Marlene hummed a little to herself as she busied herself in the kitchen, preparing tea and snacks for their guest. She hoped that Vincent would feel like sharing some of his stories with her, for even though Barret told her many tales about his adventures and about how he and his friends had saved the world from Meteor and Sephiroth, she was always anxious for more. *I’d like to be an adventurer some day!* she thought to herself, and she giggled as she thought of what it would be like to travel and see the world. True, she and Barret had moved around a lot since she was a child; from Kalm to North Corel and several other places, and then finally back to Kalm on her own insistence... but she was always wanting to see and experience more.

From the living room, Marlene could hear bits and pieces of Barret’s and Vincent’s conversation. Mostly, she heard Barret’s voice, with a few comments from Vincent in between, but as she arranged some cookies on a serving platter, she suddenly heard Barret’s voice rise in anger.

Curious, as well as concerned, Marlene stole to the kitchen door and pressed her ear against it, trying to catch what her father was upset about.

"... What the hell! Who do you think you are!" Barret yelled. Vincent’s softer voice came out as a mumbled string of sounds. Barret cursed a few times, then said something that sounded like, "... and he’s sitting outside right now?!"

*Who’s outside?* Marlene took a look out the kitchen window, watching as the rain fell steadily. In the far distance, she could see a flash of lightning. *Who could be sitting outside in weather like this?*

She made up her mind quickly, then picked up her serving tray and called out, "Daddy, Vincent, I brought you some cookies and tea!" as she entered the living room. Barret was on his feet, but as soon as his daughter entered he calmed down a bit and even allowed Marlene to guide him back to his seat.

"Now, I don’t know what the two of you are fighting about, but that’s enough of that. Here, have a little tea and a snack and I will go and make lunch for the two of you, if that’s alright?" Seeing no objection from either Vincent or Barret, Marlene excused herself and returned to the kitchen.

Slowly closing the door behind her, Marlene waited for a few moments to make sure everything was alright in the other room, then picked up a second tray of tea and cookies and snuck out the back door of the house. She cautiously made her way around the side of her house, careful to step over the puddles and at the same time, balance the delicate tray she held in her hands. She finally spotted a lone figure sitting at the foot of the porch steps to her house. The man was clad in a long hooded cloak which obscured even his face, and was hunkered down against the rain which pelted him.

"Um, excuse me?"

He looked up slowly, and Marlene gasped when she finally saw his eyes. *Mako eyes,* she thought, *that’s what they look like?* The man had bright turquoise eyes with an inhuman glow behind them, and straight silver hair which peeked out from the sides of his hood.

Gathering her courage, she said, "I’m Marlene Wallace. Are you... are you Mr. Valentine's friend?"

He gave a short nod, then fixed his eyes on the tray she carried. "Would you like some tea? I brought it out for you, if you want some..."

"Hmm. Yes, that would be nice."

Marlene smiled. "Let’s get out of the rain then. We can sit up on the porch railing and talk - if that’s okay?"

As the two of them walked up the porch steps, he asked her, "So what would you like to talk about, Miss Wallace?"

"Tell me about your travels," she said as they sat down on the railing, Sephiroth holding the tray while Marlene served up the tea. *I wonder what his name is?* she thought to herself, but that wasn’t important. He seemed nice enough and was more than willing to chat with her.

"Thank you for your hospitality," said Vincent as Barret walked him to the door.

"Yeah, well, I think you’re a good guy and all, but... you understand, don’t ya?"

Vincent nodded. He had known that it was going to be extremely difficult to convince his old partners to take in Sephiroth, with the past as it was.

"Marlene, you gonna come out and say goodbye to Vincent?" Barret called out as he opened the front door. No response.

"Wonder what that girl’s doing?" he muttered to himself, but he suddenly heard Vincent’s startled voice say, "Sephiroth?!" and the sound of something breaking on the porch.

What greeted Barret’s eyes when he ran out onto the porch was the sight of his sweet Marlene, cloaked in black and kneeling on the floor, picking up the pieces of her shattered tea set, and Sephiroth, bending down to help her.

"I can’t believe I dropped it," she was mumbling to herself, but as Sephiroth helped her pile the bits of porcelain on her silver tea tray, her mind was racing with the stories she had heard over the years. Sephiroth, the monster. Sephiroth, who destroyed Nibelheim and called Meteor down to
destroy the planet. Sephiroth, who in cold blood killed Aerith, the "flower lady." Insane, powerful, frightning, a hero turned traitor - the stuff nightmares were made of - Sephiroth.

Barret was towering over Sephiroth in a split second and pulled the legendary swordsman to his feet with a mighty tug on his collar. "Get away from Marlene!" Barret yelled, and he threw Sephiroth up against the wall.

"Daddy, don’t! I’m okay!" she managed to say before Vincent pushed his way between Sephiroth and Barret.

"We’re leaving now," said Vincent emphatically, and Barret finally backed up enough to allow Sephiroth and Vincent to pass.

"Sorry..." Sephiroth whispered to Marlene as Vincent urged him down the stairs and onto the street before them. Barret protectively put his arm around Marlene and the two of them watched silently as the two men walked off in the rain, Sephiroth’s silver hair now flowing behind him.

Marlene gasped as she put her hand up and realized that she still had Sephiroth’s cloak on...

*** *** ***

Marlene’s mind worked frantically as she prepared dinner for herself and Barret. Several hours had passed since Vincent and Sephiroth left, but Barret still stood by the window, looking out on the rain slicked streets below. At least the rain had stopped...

*I want to be an adventurer too Daddy!* she thought to herself. Funny though... she had always envisioned Sephiroth as some sort of huge monster with claws and fangs, but the Sephiroth she had met today was just a man, a rather talkative and likable man at that. And handsome too! Was he trustworthy, or was she just deluding herself with her dreams of adventure?

She made up her mind somewhere between the rolls and the gravy. After placing the last of the food on the table, she sat down at the table and said, "Sit down Daddy. They aren’t going to come back..."

"Yeah, I know." The big man sighed and sat down across from her. As he reached for a roll and some butter, Marlene cleared her throat and said, "I have something I want to tell you."

"What’s that honey?"

"I... uh, I want to be an adventurer too, like you used to be!" She waited anxiously for Barret’s reaction, but he only chewed slowly on his roll and didn’t look up at her.

"Daddy?..." Barret’s hand suddenly hit the table.

"What’re you talkin’ about?! An adventurer?! You think it’s just fun and games? Marlene, I wouldn’t have been out there if it wasn’t for the planet bein’ in danger and all! No, no; you aren’t goin’ anywhere! It’s dangerous, and you can’t even fight!"

"That’s why I was thinking about joining up with Vincent and Sephi..."

"NO! You stay away from that man, you hear? That Sephiroth is a dangerous man... dontcha remember all the stories I used to tell ya Marlene?"

Marlene tightened her hands into fists. "I’m old enough to make my own decisions Daddy. Please, just let me do this..."

"No - and that’s final! End of discussion!" yelled Barret, and he pushed himself away from the table and ran to his gym in the side of the house, his footsteps pounding furiously on the wood floor.

Marlene sighed and played with the food on her plate. She had lost her appetite too. Taking the plates back to the kitchen and wrapping the leftovers for Barret, she ran through her options in her head. The easiest thing would be to listen to her father and simply stay put, but she felt like she had been pent up in this life for far too long.

*What am I thinking? I don’t know where those two went, nor how far away they are. And Daddy’s right; I can’t fight... but somehow, I know... If I was ever in any danger, HE would protect me. That was no monster - I saw it in his eyes...*

She listened to the rhythmic pounding of Barret’s fist on the punching bag, then quietly stole upstairs and began packing up a few of her things. A few pieces of warm clothing, a flashlight and matches, a pocketknife, a whistle to call her help - then she snuck downstairs and grabbed a few rolls, a canteen for water, and finally, Sephiroth’s cloak. Stopping to scribble a note "to Daddy" and making sure Barret was still in the gym, she carefully opened the back door and went down the back steps and was gone, running down the streets in the direction she had last seen Vincent
and Sephiroth traveling.

Using her flashlight, Marlene found two sets of boot tracks in the mud and began to follow them. She hoped that the two men weren’t traveling too fast, or else she would never find them. The tracks led through some fields and finally entered a forest which seemed to stretch all the way to some craggy hills in the distance. After a few minutes in the forest, Marlene decided to find a "weapon" and picked out a long straight tree branch which would serve well as a pole. Carefully picking her way through the maze of trees, she swore that she could almost make out a faint wisp of smoke curling up from a distance...

As Marlene got closer to the campfire, she thought she heard a soft rustling sound coming from the grass around her. Looking back behind her, she saw nothing, so she used her flashlight to scan the darkness. She still didn’t see anything, but she could definitely hear the sound of something or
somethings making way through the terrain towards her. Marlene, not really sure what was out there, decided to make a tactical decision : she ran. Running as fast as her legs could take her, she dashed across the plain towards the hills that housed the campfire.

Suddenly, the sounds seemed to break into a run as well, and closed on her. Marlene looked behind her and saw something slithering through the grass towards her at great speed. But what she know noticed was that there were more than one. Without thinking twice, Marlene rose the whistle to her lips, and timed her breath to blow fiercely into it while she was exhaling. The signal whistle broke the silence of the night with a its shrill cry, but the creatures didn’t break stride.

Suddenly, as Marlene was blowing for the third time, a large, snake-like monster burst out of the grass and jumped in front of her. Marlene ducked as the creature took a swipe at her with its tiger-like claws. The beast hissed angrily, and two more of them leapt out of the grass, surrounding her. Marlene looked around frantically for some avenue of escape, but the humanoid looking snakes had her backed in on three sides. So she did the only thing she could think of - she screamed and rose her tree branch up in defense.

One of the monsters neared her, and as she poked at its head with her make-shift staff, the creature bit it with its arrow-like head. Shaking vigorously, the monster threw Marlene to the ground, and slithered forward for a final strike. Marlene closed her eyes as the thing reared its head back... but the strike never came. Instead, Marlene heard the crack of a gun. The blast hit the beast in the back of the head, and it slumped to the ground.

The other two snakes looked up, and perched on a small hill was Vincent. Aiming carefully, he took another shot, hitting a second snake in the chest area and knocking it backwards. The snake thing hissed at him, and Vincent rose to his feet and launched himself into the air. With his long cloak flowing behind him, Vincent became a black figure silhouetted against the moon. Landing lightly, Vincent coolly drew a bead on the last snake, and his gun silenced it.

Marlene breathed a sigh of relief, but both of them could hear the sound of the grass rustling again. Vincent aimed a bit to the left of Marlene, and gunned down another snake as it leapt out at Marlene. He looked around for more, but then Vincent looked up and saw a humanoid figure atop another hill behind Marlene. The figure wasted no time; leaping down off the hill with a long bladed sword held at ready... the apparent target was Marlene herself. As the figure descended, Vincent realized that it was Sephiroth, Masamune in hand ready to strike Marlene through the back. A sickening feeling of deja vu ripped through Vincent, and he wondered if maybe he had underestimated Sephiroth and that there might be another sin to come. Vincent tried to warn her, but words failed him, and Sephiroth, with his sword poised for a fatal strike, neared his target. Marlene’s face began to switch from being hers to Aerith’s and back in Vincent’s mind’s eye.

Marlene seemed to notice the fear and shock in Vincent’s eyes and started to look behind herself. Sephiroth landed two seconds later, his sword crashing into a serpent that had snuck up on Marlene and was no more than a few inches from her. Sephiroth looked up slowly, coldly, his eyes resting on Marlene’s delicate face. Vincent couldn’t help but remember that same look on the other Sephiroth’s face all those years ago when Aerith had been his target. But then his eyes softened into a look of concern and he asked, "Are you all right, Miss Wallace?"

Marlene’s eyes were wide as she looked at Sephiroth and the monster that could have killed her. Sephiroth followed her eyes, and then took a step back and pulled Masamune free from the creature’s back. Vincent’s mind couldn’t help but flash between the snake-like monster impaled on his sword, and Aerith skewered on that same sword. Marlene, still a bit in shock, managed to nod her head a bit at Sephiroth’s question.

Sephiroth gave her a good natured, pleasant smile, "That’s good...stay here, there are still two more out there," and Sephiroth fell into his legendary fighting pose, Masamune in both hands at ready to the left of his head. Sephiroth studied the ground and sounds around him for all of a second, then charged forward and sliced through the grass with a downward strike. Blood flew from the grass, as Sephiroth had unerringly struck down his opponent. The shrill hiss of another serpent could be heard, and Sephiroth gracefully backflipped as the other burst up and took two feeble swipes at him. Sephiroth landed easily behind the monster, and with an upward slash, sliced the snake creature in half.

Marlene watched the master swordsman in awe, and barely felt Vincent’s right hand rest itself on her shoulder. Looking down at her tree branch, she realized that Barret had been right: she couldn’t fight, and the world WAS a dangerous place. But seeing the great Sephiroth in action did nothing but steel her will to adventure.

Sephiroth, seeing that the monsters were finished, smirked and took two swings with Masamune. With the sword in his left hand, Sephiroth dropped his arm, holding it behind himself in a relaxed position.

Marlene then blinked and said, "Eh?" as she realized that Vincent was talking to her.

Vincent shook his head. "I said, ‘Are you okay?’ What are you doing out here?"

"Oh... I came looking for you! I want to be an adventurer too!"

Vincent sighed, "Marlene, please understand that what just happened could have been fatal if we had been further away, or didn’t investigate in time! You should go home, for I KNOW that Barret would not have sent you off or let you go by yourself. It’s obvious that you ran away from home. Now it’s time to go back."

"But... I just got here! I don’t want to turn around and run away for the rest of my life! There’s a whole world out there Vincent... I just want to see it..."

Sephiroth now approached the two, listening the whole time. But he remained silent, simply waiting to see what was going to happen.

"Marlene, there will come a time when the world will be a safer place, and then you’ll be able to move about freely... But as things stand now, I cannot guarantee your safety, and who knows what Barret will do to me, to US, if he found out something bad happened to you."

"No! I’ve made up my mind!" And at that, Marlene moved closer to Sephiroth. "You saw what happened - Sephiroth will protect me! No matter what, no matter how bad things get, I believe that the great Sephiroth will always be there to guard my life, just like he did tonight. Right Sephiroth?" Marlene looked up at the tall man with eyes filled with hope.

Sephiroth didn’t know what to say, simply looked at his ‘father’, and then nodded at her slowly.

Marlene laughed and, without thinking, hugged Sephiroth around the neck. "Thank you Sephy! I knew you wouldn’t say no! I just want to see my dreams come true!" But then she noticed what she was doing and looked up at him; Sephiroth’s face looked kind and he had a slight smirk on his face, but she could also see his cheeks beginning to blush a bit. Dislodging herself, she laughed nervously and said, "Oh my! Sorry about that...I guess I just got carried away..."
