I chose this slogan because that's exactly what the site's about. It's about
me, my life and my experiences. It's about you, your contributions and your
opinions. And it's about us - the 660,000,000+ gays and bisexuals. That's over
11% of
the world.
Someone once advised
me, "Don't make being gay the biggest thing in your life"... Well I'm
trying not to, but for now, this site is to help others like me.
A shocking thought: [this is not
about me]
At the tender age of 12 he thinks about taking
his own life for the first time... With drugs and booze plentiful he plans
the exit: a razorblade and some time alone and it will be over. Getting
totally trashed, he cuts his wrists and begins smashing his head on the
floor. The end is near, finally release. It does not work and he regains
consciousness the next day and ends up in the mental ward of the local
hospital... Death, Death, Death - that's what he wants. More drugs, high
risk gay sex with many partners, it's his own form of roulette. Death will
come soon. Another suicide attempt with prescription drugs fails, he can't
even do that right. People are still abusing him - why?...
My main
objective with my site is to make people think about how they treat
others, it can make or break them.
I want people to know how BAD this situation
is. Read this
page, it's about gay suicides. I think you'll find there are far to many.
The History of ShaunsSite
I originally started this site
from one single text document. It was my "lifestory", written to
show to people I talked to on the Internet, as I was fed up of repeating
the same old things.
So I wrote the story and password-protected it [so only people who I chose
could read it], before uploading it into my Yahoo! Briefcase. Whenever
anyone inquired about my life I would give them the URL of the file, tell
them the password and get them to read it. This continued for several
months.
After which, I started to get requests, people asking me the password. I
had recently made a website [see My
First Website.. it's a laugh!] and so I decided to put it there.
I put the URL on my profile, and got more and more hits. Then I started to
do research into homosexuality, so I could write more about gay life.
All this time I was updating my "lifestory" as a form of online
diary, so my friends could see what was going on with my life without long
conversations repeated. I found this helped a lot to cope with the hard
times I was going through, as I had lots of support from other people.
I then relocated my website to GeoCities, and deleted all references of
homosexuality on my first site [just in case]. When ShaunsGaySite [as it
was then known] started, it was a single green page, with a list of links
to other stuff I had written and also external hyperlinks. I was going to
preserve this, so I could look back on it later and laugh, but my only
copy was on a disk that got corrupted.
Then I researched into HTML further, and made a better website. For those
of you that can remember, I think you can agree it was very dark [black
and blue!] and looked depressing. I have uploaded some of it onto a site
so if you click here you can take a look! [currently unavailable]
Please note, this site is just to show you what ShaunsSite used to be
like. It is not meant to be fully functional, and most of the
links/pictures will not work.
After a while, and with the event of a new year, I decided it was time for
a change.
And so ShaunsSite v3 was born, and with it came a lot of new things. The
first major update was ShaunsSite HTML [originally known as St@rtup] which
focuses on HTML building and other things such as Computing. To date
[18/04/01] it still hasn't been finished, but you can go there and learn a
few things.
The next addition was the Password Protected page [also known as
ShaunsSite@Home]. It was only open to my very best friends and was going
to contain stories, articles and loads of other stuff that is private. I
never had the time to update it, and no-one ever posted anything there so
I've kinda given up on it now. But, as it looked very good and contains a
bit of valid information I may open it up to the public soon!
Then came a new update: The mascots. This was just a wacky idea to make my
site more colourful and look better. It was a totally kamp idea, but I
stuck with it. I used to have loads of little animals [e.g. Pongo the
Proverbial penguin, Jazz the Green Rabbit etc.] but I replaced them all
with Rocky and Links. Ain't they the cutest?
The Funzone was the next update, as we close in and get closer to the
current date. This used JavaScript to the maximum! Someone warned me that
it's bad to use JavaScript as not many people have it.. but I checked my
site stats and it said 100% of viewers had it, so I thought why not?!
A couple of days ago I won a "GayPage award of excellence" [as
you will see all over the front page and on banners!] and this really
marked a milestone in my site's history, as people had noticed it and had
commented on it. The good thing is, I didn't even enter myself for an award,
they had seen it and approached me!!
That's just about all of the
ShaunsSite history for now. Oh and one more thing; people who have
followed ShaunsSite right from the start will notice one thing that is
common to all sites. Clicky the cool spot! I've had a cool spot gif on all
of my sites, and Matthew kindly named him Mr. Clicky, lol. As you can see
he is not on this site! He was going to be a mascot before Rocky and Links
came along. So for people pining for Clicky, here he is in his original
form [ShaunsSite v1] and his updated form [ShaunsSite v2]
