The Blue Willow Legend
Long ago, a chinese emperor
lived in a magnificent pagoda
with his beautiful daughter.
She loved her father's clerk,
but was promised in marriage
to a wealthy merchant.
When the young couple eloped,
the emperor ordered them killed.
The gods spared them by turning
them into the two doves that you see
on the Blue willow pattern of this
wonderful chinese porcelain.
WHITE PORCELAIN
White porcelain was developed by the Chinese
during the T'ang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.),
in the DaHua region of Fujian province.
For centuries the secret of making white porcelain was China's alone
Portuguese trading ships brought
blue and white wares to
Europeans in the sixteenth century.
They were so greatly valued that princes and
nobles mounted porcelain pieces
in silver and gave them as presents.
But although Europeans tried to recreate
porcelain, two centuries passed before they
were able to produce fine porcelains
of their own.
