Adjudication: Occurs after prisoners break rules. A governor-grade officer will decide upon the appropiate punishment in a formal hearing with the prisoner present. A.P.S.: Accelerated Promotion Scheme. This is a fast-track opportunity for graduates, like Helen stewart, to achieve governor grade, usually within five years. Association: A period of time in which the inmates may integrate for recreation. Basic: Prisoners are graded under the Incentives and Earned Privileges Scheme. The entry level is Basic- which allows minimal freedom of movement, visits, income and facilities. In Larkhall, prisoners on the Basic regime are housed on the ground floor: the 'Ones', often in shared cells. Block: Segregation unit for inmates who break rules. Canteen: The prison shop, where prisoners can buy allowed items of food, toiletries, phone cards etc. With their personal spends and wages. C.C.R.C.: Criminal Cases Review Commission. Closed Visits: A security measure requiring the prisoner to meet her visitors behind a screen and under supervision. Compact: A deal struck between prisoners and officers, which is usually beneficial to both. Crutching: Smuggling in contraband, often drugs, by hiding it internally. Decrutching: The act- often violent- of forcibly removing the item that someone has hidden internally. The Dorm: The four-bunk double cell on G1 landing. should be avoided at all costs, as it has previously housed the ill-fated Rachel Hicks, Zandra Plackett and Renee Williams. D.S.T.: Dedicated Search Team. Special group of officers who are trained to search for drugs and other contraband. Also known as the 'Swoop Squad' or 'Squat Team'. |
Enhanced: Enhanced regime incorporates single cells with better furnishings, mostly on the top landing: the 'Threes'. Inmates also have greater freedom of movement, can recieve more visits and get more personal spends. Or, as Nikki puts it, 'a few extra quid and a duvet'. Girls: Officers' term for all women prisoners, irrespective of age. G.O.A.D.: Written shorthand for 'Good Order And Discipline'. Jellies: Temazepam, an anti-depressant drug. M.D.T.: Mandatory Drugs Testing. Prisoners are selected at random, usually by computer, to provide a urine sample. Tests are also required on reception, or if there is 'reasonable suspician'. generally referred to as 'the piss test'. Red Bands: Trusted prisoners given the better jobs within the prison- a privilage often abused. Rule 43: One of the Prison Rules, under which an unruly inmate is removed to the segregation unit for maintenance of Good Order and Discipline. Servery: Where the prisoners are served their meals. Also a great place for a fight or secret liaison. Standard: Most inmates are on this intermediate regime and are usually housed on the second landing: the 'Twos'. Strips: Punishment on the Block, where a prisoner's clothing is removed and replaced by a garment made of untearable paper- that 'blue dress thing' as modelled by Nikki. Swinger: A rope made of knotted sheets or clothing, often with plastic bag attached, swung from one cell window to another to convey illicit items. V.O.: Visiting Order. Prisoners must send a V.O. out to their intended visitors. |
