Dragonflight | Rating:******* |
Anne McCaffrey | Reviewer: fairy |
Since I joined Sheroes, I had been hearing a lot of good things about Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels. In fact, what I heard was enough to get me to find the first one, Dragonflight, and read it. As I held the book, and opened it to read the first page, I hoped that I had been directed to a good book, while at the same time expecting to be let down, seeing as though not everyone likes the same things.
A few days later, I found myself reading the last page and closing the book, totally satisfied. The book was everything I had hoped it would be, and more.
Dragonflight begins with Lessa getting the revenge on her family's murderer that she had been waiting years for. Then, she gets taken to Benden Weyr as a candidate for the last queen dragon egg on the planet. After Impressing Ramoth and becoming Benden's Weyrwoman, Lessa begins to rebel against tradition and drive the Weyrleader F'lar crazy. Then, on a fateful day, Thread, Pern's enemy, begins to fall from the sky again, just as F'lar predicted. The nay-sayers to F'lar's prediction are forced to accept the reality, just as he and Lessa realise that their one Weyr of riders is not enough to do the job of six. With the other five Weyr's long abandoned, Lessa and F'lar must find a way to save Pern from the Threads.
The plot of Dragonflight was very original and interesting. I really got caught up in the suspense of whether or not they'd succeed. The setting, Pern, was very well developed. You got a clear look into the social structure of the planet, as well as the vast differences from one location to another. It made you think that Pern could actually exist.
Perhaps one of the things I liked best about the book was its cast of characters. They were developed well, and their interactions with each other were believable, despite some of the characters being dragons. I particularly liked Lessa, and getting to see the relationship between her and F'lar grow and change. The relationships between the riders and their dragons were also interesting and very touching.
Dragonflight was a very good book. It has various qualities to make people of various preferences enjoy it. There are the Thread fighting scenes for those of you looking for action, dragons for all you fantasy lovers and plenty of male characters to satisfy any self-proclaimed fan girl. It is definetly the type of book that would appeal to both genders, and I say to everyone: Give it a try, and you just might like it!
