Ella Enchanted | Rating:******* |
Gail Carson Levine | Reviewer: Lady Livy |
"Clean your room," your mom orders. You can say something like, "Give me five more minutes, please!" But if you're Ella of Frell , then no such luck! A foolish fairy gave you the "gift" of obedience at birth and now you have to do whatever anybody tells you to do.
It's definitely bad for Ella. Her mother has died, and her father has remarried a rich dame, Dame Olga, with two incredibly annoying daughters, Hattie and Olive. Hattie tries at every turn to take advantage of Ella's curse, but Ella is not one to sit back and just take it! She sets out on a quest to find the foolish fairy Lucinda and get rid of her curse once and for all. Set on a colorful backdrop of princes, ogres, wicked stepmothers, and giants, this lively, original fairy tale is sure to please all!
This book is one of my favorite books of all time. Gail Carson Levine does a positively amazing job with descriptions, languages, and feelings. You feel exactly as Ella feels when she escapes from the ogres, runs away from finishing school, and all the other dangers and humorous twists she encounters. And at the close of the book, you may want to put it down and give it a standing ovation, as I did when I first finished it. (I was actually standing when I read it, so there was no other way to applaud it…)
Truly, and here I am totally serious, the end feels as if a curtain has been drawn and the actors are going to come out any second now for their bows.
Now you can see that I highly recommend Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. I hope you read and enjoy it!
