Jackaroo Rating:*******
Cynthia Voigt Reviewer: fairy
I recently read the first book in Cynthia Voigt's Kingdom books,
Jackaroo. It was a fairly good book, and I enjoyed reading it.
Set in the fictional Kingdom, it tells the story of Gwyn, the
Innkeeper's daughter.

All her life, Gwyn has been hearing stories passed down about Jackaroo,
an outlaw who helps those in need (Think Robin Hood). In all the
stories, Jackaroo's true identity is different, and no one truly knows
if he ever existed. Then when caught in a blizzard, Gwyn and a young
Lordling get separated from their companions and find shelter in an
abandoned house. There she finds a set of Jackaroo's clothing and begins to
find truth in those stories. Soon she realises that the time will come
for Jackaroo to ride again.

I found the plot interesting, although some minor points left me
confused. Some of the "Whys" for those small things weren't clearly
explained, and I was left wondering, but as they were minor details, they did
not take away from the overall plot. With the characters, the only one
who got fully developed was Gwyn. I didn't feel as if I knew the other
characters that well, but what I did learn gave me a fairly good idea
about their main personality traits. As setting goes, the Kingdom is a
very intriguing place, and I wish that the world had been described in
greater detail. Regardless, what was described was very good.

It was nice to see Gwyn looking forward to her future when the book
ended, and thinking about how her story will be part of the mystery that
surrounds Jackaroo.

I'd recommend Jackaroo to readers wanting a book with a
historical feel to it, mixed with a small bit of fantasy. Just read it with one
small warning: this first book causes enough interest that it makes you
want to read the ones that follow. I leave you with the hope that the
others are as good as this one.
