" Sings 'The Cole Porter Songbook'"

Rating:8 Out of 10 Stars
Ella Fitzgerald Reviewer: Zanna

This two-disc set, originally released in 1956, showcases two of America's great treasures: Ella Fitzgerald's glorious voice and Cole Porter's brilliant music. Many of Porter's best-known songs are on this album, including "Begin the Beguine," "Night and Day," "Miss Otis Regrets," and one of the sexiest versions of "Anything Goes" that I've ever heard.

One of my favorite things about this recording is the simplicity of the arrangements. Every word is understandable, and while Ella adds just enough ornamentation to let you know that yeah, she's got that scat in her back pocket, on this recording it's a real pleasure just to hear her sing, and to be able to enjoy the rich sound of her voice.

Three tracks in this collection that really stand out to me are "Ridin' High," "It's All Right With Me," and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye." The first two are the most fun tracks in the set, a pair of up-tempos in the midst of ballads, and Ella sings them with all the flair they deserve. "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," is the complete opposite, a gorgeous and haunting rendition of a song that epitomizes the bittersweetness that can be found in most of Porter's love songs.

Overall, this is a collection that is well worth having, whether you are an Ella Fitzgerald fan, a Cole Porter fan, or just getting to know either artist.
