Children are dressed in their BEST clothes. Often girls will wear their prettiest silk kimonos with matching sandals too. Boys sometimes wear the kimono or a regular sportcoat and pants. In the pictures below, the mother and daughter were both dressed in fancy kimonos each with slippers that matched the pattern and colors of their kimono. Don't they look beautiful? |

Outside the shrine there are many booths that sell things for parents to buy their children during Shichi-Go-San. |
Kids get CANDY! They candy is called chitose-ame which means "thousand-year candy" and it represents long life. The candy comes in the long bags and during Shichi-Go-San outside the shrines you will see children carrying them. The candy is red and white in color. Each individual stick is about a foot in length. The paper bag itself is often decorated with good luck symbols such as pine, plum, or bamboo and a crane and tortoise together. |
