Poppy Day

(least we forget)

The long night seems endless as I toss and turn

dreaming of ghostly figures of men, and pain

Beckoning to me with out-stretched arms

did we all die in vane?

a cry from long-dead lips...

Don’t let this hell-on-earth ever happen again.

Each one now a Poppy on Remembrance Day

each one gave his life away

not wishing to go but had no choice

with pangs of conscience after listening to

Kitcheners voice!

Your country needs you!  Sign up now!

come this way m' boys

A brand new shilling for your life

put your X here and kiss your wife.

Whole towns and villages

brothers, fathers, uncles, sons,

sweethearts and mothers-boys

all to the Somme and No-Mans-Land

and for their Country they gave their lives

hell endured with screeching cries

Of starving corpses with whites of eyes

Gone now... but not forgotten

Least we forget, and God forbid

If war ever came this way again

Then all those brave men died, in vane

And mankind has learned... Nothing!

Of Scarlet fields

Of War

Of Pain

Of Suffering

Note: Of course war did come again!, mankind never does learn.   does he?
