Project Proposal

Overview:
Overall we want to create a "trailer" for a movie.  The overall storyline is described below, but the overall effect we want is that the piece will flow more like a movie trailer (or preview) than an actual short film.

Story Line:

Scene 1

The survivor of the scientific expedition is recording the diary entry on the tape recorder of what happened to the crew.  She as seating in front of the computer monitor.  As she talks about loosing the crew members one by one, and not being able to explain how it happened until the latest death, camera zooms on to the photograph on the table that captured the whole crew.  Camera keeps zooming onto the person, who died last.
Scene 2
Cut.  Flashback to the scene of the death of the member of the crew, just seen on the photograph.
Scene 3
Cut.  Back to the room where survivor records the log of the events.  She still tells the story explaining that now she knows who is responsible for the deaths, and she is going to hunt that creature to destroy it.  At that very moment computer ends its search displaying the current location of the Beast.  The Survivor stands up saying: "I am going after it!"

Cut.   Survivor puts black hat on
Cut    Survivor puts on sun glasses
Cut    Cocking (reloading) the gun

Scene 4
Black screen
Sound of Beast roaring
Cut to the beast in  infrared light
Survivor is knocked to the ground by the beast; gun is out of hands
See the transparent Beast
Scene 5
Cut.   Survivor  running away
Cut.   Beast chasing the survivor
Scene 6
Cut.   Survivor on the overpass running;  Survivor Jumps off the bridge
Cut.   Black screen
Scene 7
Cut.  Beast roaring

Raw Footage:

We will need to create several different environments.  One is a room where the main character is recording her journal entry.  We are thinking about filming Anna in her room in front of  her desk and computer.  We are also going to film a lot of outside footage with some trees and open fields.  Some possible locations we are considering are around the Burger Bowl, the Physics building, and Emory Park.  The climax of the trailer takes place in a high place so we are going to do some filming from the MARC overpass.  Most of our filming we done outside so we are going to try to do all of our blue screening outside as well.

Main Effect/ Module Description
We want to create an effect similar to the one used in the movies Predator and  Predator 2.  In these movies the "beast" has a device that allows him to become "invisible", however, it is still possible to see it's outline.  The creature has a "transparent-like" effect, but everything through the beast looks distorted, almost like refracted light.  There is currently nothing in AfterEffects to perform this effect so this is what we want to do.  We will be blue-screening all of the action of our "creature" and compositing it into our footage.  We hope that we can apply our filter and properly layer our "creature" with the footage so that the outline of the "creature" is retained and the body is transparent, but it refracts the light through it.

Other Effects
1.) Scientist 2 (Alex) gets lifted in the air by the creature - We believe this can be done without the use of a crane or other external device.  AfterEffects has the unique function of being able to composite and shape layers.  So we will blue screen the "creature" (Elliot) and Scientist 2 (Alex) separately.  We will blue-screen Alex on the laying on his side so that he can move his legs giving a "dangling" effect when he is composited in the air.  We will blue screen Elliot mimicing raising something into the air by the neck.  Then we will layer the creature over Scientist 2 in the composite window.  If the filter works properly, we should see the outline
of the creature's hand around Alex's neck.

2.) Scientist 2 (Alex) gets disentegrated - This should be pretty easy.  We want to create a flare effect from the creature's arm while it is holding Alex in the air and disentegrate him.  AfterEffects has nice dissolve feature that we can use for this effect.

3.) Scientist 1 (Anna) falls off the overpass - First we will film the ground from the overpass.  Then we will blue-screen Anna flailing her arms and screaming.  We can easily composite these two images together for the desired effect.

4.) Infrared - Since the creature is supposed to be invisible we want to create an infrared type effect on the camera.  We will take regular footage as if looking through infrared goggles and modify the color attributes in AfterEffects to mimic an infrared view.

5.) Sky/Environment coloring - We may use some of the filters in AfterEffects to create the appropriate mood for the trailer by decreasing/increasing light or modifying certain color attributes.  We will have to see the final footage to be sure though.

Team Assignments
Overall, everything will be a group effort, but we have made assignments for certain people to be responsible for specific things.

Alex - Filter/Module Design/ Actor/ Sound FX
Elliot - Filming/ Editing/ Dialogue for Voice Over
Anna - Editing/ Actress/ Dialogue for Voice Over/ Music FX
