Las Vegas saw plenty of action as the 2004 AND 1 Mix Tape rolled its way through the Orleans Arena with an AND 1 win over the local squad, 97-87. The local crowd saw the return of Spyda (Dennis Chism) from last year’s ESPN2 season of Streetball as he came out to Open Run to once again try his shot at becoming the next AND 1 Mix Tape player.
Spyda put on an impressive show as second-leading scorer for the Vegas team with 24 points, seven boards, five assists and four serious dunks. He was matched in scoring only by 757 (Sante Gale, picked up in Oakland) who had another great game with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Other players competing for the television show and endorsement contract, “Exile- the Young One” (Roberto Yong, picked up in Sacramento) and “Father Time” (Deshun Jackson, picked up in Los Angeles), both stepped up and showed their game as well. Competition was so strong that Spyda got picked up but no one player was sent home, which means that the next game will eliminate two players.
As for the show that the AND 1 Mix Tape team put on, that was just as intense. Helicopter never ceased to amaze the crowd with show-stopping dunk after dunk- 12 of his 14 points were from monster jams, including two back-to-back dunks in the second half. Main and Go Get It both had strong performances as well, each with some serious dunks of their own, contributing 22 points and 21 points, respectively.
