"I remember having a beer with Bob Scoggins and asking, 'How the hell do you do Shakespeare?' He looked at me and said, 'Kid, stand up straight, say your lines clearly and get off stage.' That may be the most helpful advice anyone's ever given me." The 28-year-old chisel-cheeked stage actor is not considered too long in the tooth to play Spike, the sarcastic nemesis of TV's favourite Vampire Slayer. Still, Californian James Marsters is wise beyond his years at New York's Julliard School and the Chicago stage. Though on camera he emulates every girl's fantasy, behind the scenes he exercises humility and a sense of humour about his trade. "Theatre made me want to be an actor for two reasons: First, for the sense of community. And second, I get to fool large groups of strangers." A lover of Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, his 1965 Ford Mustang and girlfriend Liz Stauber, Marsters is presently hard at work on his latest goal: "Cracking Level 7 on Playstation's Die Hard Trilogy II."
