Houses of Parliament

The houses of Parliament's role is an essential part of UK politics, its main roles are challenging the works of the government. Debating and passing all laws, enabling the government to raise taxes. The crown plays an essential role in opening and dissolving Parliament and approving bills before they become law. One tradition of the opening is the Yeoman of the guard as a precaution searches the cellars, as in 1605 there was a plot to blow up Parliament.

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed attempt by a group of provincial English Catholics to kill King James 1 and his family, and most of the Protestant aristocracy in a single attack by blowing up the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening The conspirators had then planned to abduct the royal children, (who were Protestant) not present in Parliament, and incite a revolt in the Midlands. The conspirators were even shot trying to escape or hung when captured. And on the 5th November the countries of the commonwealth celebrate the failure with bonfires and fire works,  one of the many names for this night is Guy Fawkes night
