Trafalgar
Square is a square that commemorates the Battle of
Trafalgar, a British Naval victory of the Napolenic Wars. The
original name was to have been "King William the Fourth's
Square", but George Ledwell Taylor suggested the name
"Trafalgar Square". In the centre of the square is a column
which is 151 feet which on top rest's
Admiral Nelson figure
which is 17 feet tall. The statue faces south, towards the
palace of Westminster and along Pall Mall, where his ships
are represented on the top of each flagpole. One of the main
features of the square are the four bronze lions. Some of the
statues in Trafalgar Square are
General Napier and
George Washington.
The square, a popular site for political celebrations and demonstrations from V.E Day to the Poll Tax riots. With the fountain as well it is a popular place for tourists. You will also fine the National Gallery and the National Portrait Galley.
