Panamint Rattlesnake

Crotalus mitchelli stephensi

The Panamint Rattlesnake is a subspecies of the Speckled Rattlesnake; it is named for the Panamint Mountains of Death Valley.  The photographs of this snake show how well the coloration of most rattlesnakes harmonizes with their environments.  This snake was almost invisible in its hiding place at the base of this shrub.  I found this snake very close to "the Racetrack" at Death Valley National Park.
