Anything but Ordinary

Chapter 4

Since Brandy and Melissa didn't have any homework they spent the time before they left for dinner talking about their day. Around 4:30 Debbie loaded the children into the car and headed to the other side of town and Dr. Abbott's house. Marshall was able to get shot gun and Brandy and Melissa sat in the back seat taking in the scenary that passed them. "You will like Harold, he is a really interesting person," Debbie commented. "He also has a daughter about your age," She told Brandy and Melissa, "I'm sure you will be good friends."

Brandy and Melissa looked at each other with similar horrified looks on their faces, 'Amy Abbott' they mouthed at the same time. Debbie and Marshall began discussing his classes which gave Brandy and Mel a chance to talk about their new discovery. "Abbott, why didn't we think of that when we first met her?" Melissa inquired. "I guess we weren't really thinking about it so we didn't make the connection," Brandy suggested. "End well this dinner will not," Melissa shook her head.

Brandy laughed thinking how dinner with the Brown's had turned out and how they were developing a trend, "Touche Yoda, Touche." Debbie pulled the car into the drive way of a large, wealthy looking house. "Damn," Debbie said, "He's pretty well off for a small town doctor." Debbie was getting out of the car when she accidently hit the cup of Dr.Pepper that was in the cup holder and it spilt all down the side of the seat and into the floor board.

"Shit," Debbie said as she began frantically grabbing napkins and instructing Marshall to help her soak the liquid from the carpet. "It's almost 5, you girls go on in and tell Harold we'll be right there," Debbie told her children.. Brandy and Melissa silently got out of the car and walked to the door. "God give us strength," Brandy said with a laugh before she knocked on the door.

A few seconds later the door opened and Brandy and Melissa were very surprised to see the 'wierd diminision cute' boy from the cafeteria standing on the other side of it. He looked equally shocked to see them standing there. "Hi," Brandy said to him, "I'm Brandy Mathers and this is my sister Melissa." His surprised face turned into a smile, "You must be Debbie's daughters. I'm Bright Abbott. I remember seeing you from school today. How'd you like it?" Melissa took the 5th and stood silently but she knew her sister wouldn't.

"It was alright," Brandy told him, "once we got past all the rude people that is." Bright developed a quizzical look, "Rude people?" As if on cue Amy appeared behind her brother. "Hi again," she said to them. "Speak of the devil," Brandy said under her breathe. Melissa stiffled a laugh, "Hello." By this time Debbie and Marshall were with them on the porch, "You must be Amy and Bright. I heard so much about you from your dad today." Bright and Amy greeted her warmly then invited them into the house and lead them to the dining room.

The table was covered with food and a woman dressed in an elegant looking blue suit sat in a chair. She gave Debbie a slightly odd look as she observed Debbie's low cut top and tight jeans. Before Debbie noticed, she replaced the look with a warm smile, "You must be Mrs. Mathers." Debbie shook her hand, "Please call me Debbie. Whenever someone says Mrs. Mathers I feel like they're talking to my mother." The woman smiled, "Well Debbie, I'm Rose Abbott. Harold's wife." Debbie smiled but didn't say anything as she picked up on the emphasis put on wife. Harold came down a few moments later and everyone was introduced. Dinner began rather silently with Harold doing his best to get a conversation started. "So girls, you started County High today right?" he asked Melissa and Brandy.

"Yeah," Melissa told him, "It was...different. Not quite like our school in Nashville. It's going to take some adjusting." Harold nodded in agreement, "Yeah moving can be a difficult experience or so I hear I've lived here all my life so I wouldn't really know first hand. I'm sure Amy would be glad to introduce you to some of her friends. I'm sure you don't know too many people yet." Melissa shot Brandy a look that told her not to make an ass of herself so she tried to keep it all civil, "We actually already met one of Amy's friends, Kayela I think her name was. About the only person we knew before we started school was our neighbor Ephram Brown. He gave us a very fitting welcome to County High."

Melissa snickered and Amy looked at her. "I'm sure that it has been pretty hard on you guys, "Amy said sympathetically, "But, it can't compare to what I had to go through with Colin last year. I'm just glad that he is better now and we are back together. So things will get better for you all too." When Amy mentioned Colin Brandy saw Bright roll his eyes at her and thought that he couldn't be such a bad guy.

After dinner Amy was talking about a shopping trip she had made with Kayela the previous weekend. "So," Amy said, "We found this little store that had so much Justin Timberlake merchandise it was unreal. My room is like Justin mania." Brandy rolled her eyes as did Bright. "Oh," Debbie said, "Melissa is a huge Justin fan too." Amy shot Melissa a large smile, "Would you like to come and see all the new stuff in my room?"

Melissa's face fell, "Well uh..." Debbie shot her a look that told her she better not piss off her mom's boss. "Sure," said Melissa trying to sound convincing, "Sounds fun." Brandy let out a small chuckle as her sister walked up the stairs following Amy Abbott. "Brandy," Debbie said, "Bright is about to take out the trash, why don't you lend him a hand?" Brandy thought about how sad it was that her mother wanted them to befriend the Abbott children so badly.

But considering the alternative was chatting it up in Amy's room, the trash didn't sound so bad, "Sure." She found Bright in the kitchen tying up a garbage bag. Another one sat on the floor nearby. She picked it up and said, "Need a hand?" He picked up the bag he had just tied, "Thanks." They passed by where the Abbotts were being entertained by something Debbie was saying. Marshall sat silently in a chair against the wall. She gave him a weak smile feeling very bad for him having to sit there alone. She and Bright were silent until they got outside.

They stuffed the bags in the huge garbage can on the side of the house. "Thanks for helping," Bright said to her as he sat down on the swing set that was in the middle of the back yard. She walked over and stood behind him, "No problem. It sounded more fun than Justin Timberlake and Amy...Sorry I shouldn't talk about your sister like that in front of you."

Bright turned around in his seat so he could see her, "Don't worry about it. I love my sister but she can be really irritating. Be glad you weren't here when Colin was in the coma. She was so much worse then with the whole martyr thing." Brandy kicked up some dirt at her feet, "That's pretty sad. She must have some issues. Want a push?" Bright smiled at her, "Sure." Then he twisted back around in the swing seat so his back was to her. She grabbed the sides of the swing and pulled Bright back then let him go.

The Mathers left not too long after that and they rode home silently except for Debbie going on and on about the Abbotts. Once home, Marshall went to bed and Brandy and Melissa left Debbie watching the evening news so they could talk. Once inside Brandy's room Melissa said, "I hate you. Life is not fair. You get to hang out with the 4th diminision cute guy and I get stuck hearing about how everything translates to some reason I should feel bad for Amy."

Brandy laughed as she sat down on her bed, "Hey, I had to hear all that shit from her today in class. What about Rose Abbott?" Brandy made a whipping motion and sound. Melissa busted out laughing, "That is exactly what I was thinking all during dinner." Then she immitated Rose, "I'm Harolds WIFE. Respect my authority."

Now it was Brandy's turn to laugh, "Can't really blame her though. Mom did make every attempt possible to look seductive and skanky. She really should have dressed more modestly and things would have gone smoother." They continued this discussion for a few more minutes then decided to go to bed in prepararion of tomorrows school day.

The next day Ephram took Brandy and Melissa to school but Debbie said that she would drop Marshall off on her way to work since she had gotten up on time. The day went smoother than the one before. Brandy and Melissa even met some people in their classes that were friendly. That made the day go by quicker than the previous one had and before they knew it the bell rang for lunch.

Brandy and Melissa got their food and then got a table to wait for Ephram who had said he was going to join them. Before he got there though Bright Abbott came up to them, "Hi. Mind if I join you ladies?" There were plenty of chairs and since Brandy and Melissa weren't aware of the tension between Bright and Ephram, Brandy said, "Sure." Bright sat down next to Brandy, "So is this day going better than yesterday?" Before they could answer Kayela walked up behind Bright.

"Bright," she said, "can I talk to you for minute?" He gave her a quizzical look, "What is it?" Kayela completely ignored the fact that Brandy and Melissa were sitting there, "Do you realize that you hanging out with the white trash of Everwood is giving people a bad impression of your sister?" Brandy jumped up out of her seat, "Who are you calling white trash you malicious bitch?" Before Kayela could answer Bright stood up between them. "Kayela," he said, "why don't you mind your own business? Its obvious that you don't know these girls at all. They are nicer and have more class than you will ever hope to."

Kayela gave Bright a vicious look and then stomped away. Melissa smiled and felt so relieved because she knew that had Bright not intervened Brandy and Kayela would have probably ended up fighting. The entire cafetria was now staring at them and Ephram stood a few feet away. After Kayela stomped off people began looking away, noticing that the excitement was over. "Thanks," Brandy said to Bright.

"No problem," he replied, "She had no reason to talk about you guys like that." Ephram walked over and sat down at the round table between Melissa and Bright. "Hi Ephram," Melissa said to him. "Hey," he said, "Kayela strikes again." Brandy shook her head, "That bitch needs a life." Ephram and Bright never spoke to each other though they both reamined civil during lunch.

When they day was over Ephram, Brandy, and Melissa piled into his car to head home. "So," Ephram said, "I didn't know that you two were friends with Bright Abbott." They told Ephram about the dinner the night before and then about what had happened at lunch and how Bright had defended them. "Don't let him fool you," Ephram said, "He's more like Amy than I care to think about. He will use you just as quick as she used me."

Melissa who was sitting in the front seat next to Ephram turned around to give her sister a 'what the fuck' look. "What happened?" Brandy asked Ephram caustiously not knowing if he would be willing to share too much with them. He proceeded to tell them the story of the year before when he first moved to town and Amy had befriended him to have his father do the surgery on Colin. Then he told them that after Colin recovered Amy acted as though she didn't know Ephram at all.

"I really liked her," he said, "I fell so hard for her that I couldn't see she was using me and didn't really care." The girls remained silent for a moment, shocked that Ephram had shared so many painful things with them since he had only known them about a week. "No wonder you don't like the Abbotts very much," Melissa commented. No one talked much on the rest of the ride home. When they got home Debbie and Marshall weren't there yet so Brandy and Melissa went into the kitchen and made themselves sandwiches. They sat around the table enjoying their snack.

"Comas, backstabbing, maliciously using people, and a 4th diminsion cute guy defending out honor. Why does it feel like we are trapped in a daytime soap opera?" Brandy questioned. Melissa laughed, "If only we were identical twins, I could kill you and take over your life and that would complete the stereotypical soap."

Brandy laughed, "But I really do appreciate Bright taking up for us. That doesn't happen very often. Though, I totally could have kicked her ass." Melissa frowned, "Yeah I know. I think Bright likes you." Brandy quivered and said jokingly, "Nothing against Bright but if I ended up marrying him do you realize that I would be related to Amy Abbott." Melissa turned her nose up, "I think I would rather jam blunt pencils in my eyes." Brandy laughed, "As would I."
