      "Wheeling, West Virginia"

Settled in 1769 by Ebenezer Zane and followers.
Name derived from Indian word, "Wheelin",
which name was used for years prior to the Zane
settlement to designate the creek which bisects the city.
In 1793 the existence of Wheeling as a town became
evident when Zane divided the settlement into lots.
Wheeling was not Incorporated as a town until 1806
by the General Assembly of Virginia.

      "Gateway Town"

Wheeling has long been the hub of the Northern Panhandle.
A pre-Revolutionary outpost and stop along the path to the
western frontier, and the movement to the west.
The town was a port of entry during the 18th and 19th
centuries and later became a very popular
Victorian center of glass, steel and textiles.

      "West Virginia Independence Hall"
      A National Historic Landmark
      Wheeling, West Virginia

      "Birthplace of West Virginia"

Nearly six years before President Lincoln signed the
Proclamation making West Virginia the 35th State
in the Union, construction had begun on the
      "Wheeling Custom House"
      Headquarters for Federal Offices
for the Western District of Virginia.
Its completion, coinciding with the beginning of the
Civil War, provided a facility for heated political
      discussions and constitutional conventions that
led to eventual statehoodfor West Virginia in 1863.
Here, issues dividing many Virginians, slavery being
one of many, were debated, compromised and shaped
      into the skeleton of statehood.
Serving as the Restored Government of Virginia,
aligned with the Union from 1861-1863,
it is appropriately known today as the
      "West Virginia Independence Hall"
