David G. Castleman
David Gale Castleman, 47, of Greenwood Village, Colorado, died Monday, June 2, 1997 of cancer. He was employed as an International Director of Human Resources at Echo Bay Mines in Denver, Colorado. He was born on November 23, 1949 in Springfield to Gale and Eileen Castleman. He married Carolyn Hanks on September 4, 1987 in Denver. He was a facilitator of American Compensation Association and Mountain States Employees. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1972 with a Master's Degree in Labor and Industrial Relations. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jennifer (Chad) Goveia of Decatur; his parents, Gale and Eileen Castleman of Aurora, Colo.; one sister Cindy (John) Matsko, of Dixon and two nieces, Melissa (Jeff) Engaldo of Champaign and Amy (Mark) Molzer of Wheaton.

Thomas E. England, 76, of Springfield, died at 4:55 a.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital. Thomas was born on September 5, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Edward and Dorothy Finley England. He married Judy Tinsley on October 23, 1954 in Springfield.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, receiving the National DKF SVC Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a graduate of Lanphier High School and Western Illinois University. He received his Master’s Degree from Sangamon State University (now U.I.S.). He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for approximately fifteen years. He was also a member of The Easy E’s, American Business Club, Springfield Sports Hall of Fame and I.H.S.A. Coaches Hall of Fame.
He was employed as a school teacher and coach at Springfield School District 186 and also Riverton School District. He also had been employed as a Salesman for U.S. Life in the Springfield area, supervisor of couriers and INB mailroom and retired from the State of Illinois Dept. of Financial Institutions. He was a basketball referee and served as the apprentice lounge director at Brookhills Golf Course.
Thomas was a funny gentleman who enjoyed sports, singing and being around people. He was a great dad and grandpa.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving is wife, Judy England of Springfield; two sons: Doug (Elaine) England of Springfield and Steve England of South Korea; three daughters: Karen England of Chicago, Kelly (Brent) Bosie of Riverton and Laura (Jeff) Swetow of Chicago and five grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Hannah, Chase, Brooke and Sara.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Department of Defense will conduct military honors.

Frank "Mr. Frank" Frankowiak

Frank "Mr. Frank" Frankowiak, 84, of Springfield passed on October 31, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on August 6, 1922 in Whiting, Indiana, the son of Frank and Mary Frankowiak. He married Anna Jenkins on February 3, 1945 in Bainbridge, Maryland.
Frank graduated from Clark High School in Hammond, Indiana. He then attended Indiana State University earning a BA and MS degree in 1948. Frank then enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 serving in the Philippine Islands and discharged in 1946.
Mr. Frankowiak moved to Springfield in 1948 where he taught school at Stuart and Hay Edwards Schools. He was the principal of Palmer School, Edison Junoir High, Enos School, Springfield High School, and Director of Secondary, Adult and Vocational Edcuation retiring in 1982. Frank then became Parking Manager for the City of Springfield retiring in 1992.
Frank was a past member of Springfield Junior Chamber of Commerce, YMCA Membership Committee, Mental Health Board of Directors, American Red Cross Board of Directors, Board for Retarded Children, and Springfield Boys Club. Past Commander of American Legion Post 32, President of the Illinois Edcuation Asssociation, President of the Springfield Principal Association, President of Phi Delta Kappa, Vice President of the State Junior High School Association, Director of the Summer Camp for Crippled Children at Camp Star of the Sea and Chairman of Sangamon County United Fund. Frank was elected to the Sangamon County Board and was instrumental in having the Barton Pipe Organ transferred to Springfield High School. He received community service awards for Most Outstanding Jaycee, Outstanding Young Man of Springfield, Boys Club Golden Boy Trophy, Sertoma International Service Award, and Palmer School Reunion Award. He is a current member of St. Paul's Lodge 500, Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite, High "12", Ansar Temple, Capitol City Shrine Club, Ansar Shrine Retirees Club, Life Member American Legion Post 32, Interveterans Burial Detail, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Christ Episcopal Church, and Springfield Bible Church.
Frank is survived by his wife Anna, daughter Linda (Jerry) Neubert of Sullivan, WI. Shirley Frankowiak of Springfield, son Kenneth (Jean) Frankowiak of Springfield, sister Eleanor Lach of Whiting, IN., five granddaughters, one grandson, two great granddaughters, one greatgrandson, and several nieces and nephews.

William C. Hughes
William "Bill" Conner Hughes, 56, of Manchaca, Texas, formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, December 14, 2006, of lymphoma cancer. He was born December 17, 1949, in Columbia, MO., the son of George R. and Marguerite Conner Hughes. Mr. Hughes graduated from Springfield High School in 1967. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1969 to 1973, including in Southeast Asia. He retired from IBM after 32 years. Survivors: wife, Janice A. Hughes; son, Mathew Hughes of Austin; daughter, Dr. Holly A. (husband Mike) Poremski of Austin; a grandson; parents, George and Marguerite of Springfield; and sister, Catherine Doyle of Anaheim, California. Gone much to soon, we will miss Bill and keep him in fond memories of days so long past.

Susan Jensen
Susan H. Jensen-Veit, 50, of Munich, Germany, formerly of Springfield, died Friday, December 17, 1999. She was born November 10, 1949, in Evanston, the daughter of Robert and Violet Linnemann Jensen. She married Johannes Veit. Mrs. Johannes-Veit attended St. John's Lutheran School in Mount Prospect, Trinity Lutheran School in Springfield and was a graduate of Springfield High School. She also attended Valparaiso University and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1974. She was a foreign exchange student at the University of Frankfort, Germany, before establishing residency in Munich. Survivors: husband, Johannes Veit; mother, Violet Jensen of Springfield; a sister, Karen Pacheco of Los Angeles; three brothers, Robert Jensen of Shawnee, Kansas, Thomas (wife, Ann) Jensen of Decatur and William (wife, Cindy) Jensen of Sherman; six nieces; five nephews; a great-niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

David Johnson
David passed away on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at St. John's Hospital. He was born June 19, 1947, in Springfield, the son of Helen M. Johnson. He married Susan K. Ritter in Springfield on Jan. 20, 1973. He was an operating engineer for 34 years and worked the past 25 years with Petersburg Plumbing and Heating. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He is survived by his mother, Helen of Springfield; wife, Susan K. (Ritter) Johnson of Springfield; and two daughters, Tasha Johnson and Amy Friedman; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Burial was at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.

Rich Jones
James R. “Rich” Jones, 58, of Auburn, died at 7:40 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2007 at Memorial Medical Center. Rich was born May 29, 1949 in Springfield, the son of James Luther and Clara Jean Stewart Jones. He married Doris I. Bortell on April 19, 1980 in Chatham. Rich was a 1967 graduate of Springfield High School. He then attended the United Electronics Institute in Louisville, KY. He was employed at Texas Instruments in Dallas, TX in the early 1970’s working on the Forward Looking Infrared Radars (FLIR). Rich then worked for the Dickey-john Corporation in Auburn in the Engineering Department. Rich was his family’s handyman. He enjoyed tinkering and helping with many projects. He also enjoyed playing for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Chatham’s softball league. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife: Doris Jones of Auburn; four children: Theresa Jones of Springfield, Mike Jones of St. Louis, Michelle Jones (fiancé, Nick Reagon) of St. Louis and Melanie Jones of Auburn; two sisters: Barb (husband, Tom) Marvel of Springfield and Rebecca (husband, David) Jones-Grooms of Elm City, NC; one aunt: Avo Hancock of CA; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and three cats: Puddles, Harley and Tigger.

Sandra Kirk Hill
Sandra "Sandy" Ann Hill, 57, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 9:52 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at her home after a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). She was born July 24, 1949, in Springfield, the daughter of John Lowell and Thelma Maxine Engle Kirk. She married Kent Hill on Aug. 2, 1975. Her mother preceded her in death. Mrs. Hill worked at the state Department of Registration and Education, which is now the Department of Professional Regulation, office of military affairs and the office of the state fire marshal, retiring in 2002. She was a gifted artist, avid reader and a baker of wonderful treats who loved her family deeply. She enjoyed scrapbooking and photography, as well as long walks in the park with Kent and their Scottie, Bonnie. She had a smile that lit up the room. She was an eye donor through the Heartland Lions Eye Bank so that others may see the world. Surviving are her husband, Kent Hill of Springfield; sister, Nancy Marie Kirk of Springfield; two brothers, John Wayne (Janice M.) Kirk of Springfield and Mark Brian Kirk of Manassas, Va.; father, John Lowell Kirk of Springfield; several aunts, uncles, nieces, great-nieces and cousins; and a great-nephew.

Cancer took our dear friend and classmate on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Sandy, 54, was born in Springfield on July 20, 1949. She was co-owner of Today's Headlines hair salon. She will be greatly missed by all of us.

She was born February 8, 1949, in Springfield, the daughter of Ralston and JoAnn Turley McLain Jr. Survivors: a son, Todd McLain Burke of Springfield; father, Ralston McLain Jr. of Springfield; mother, JoAnn McLain of Raleigh, North Carolina; a brother, John McLain of Chester, Connecticut; and two nieces.

Rex Merrick
Rex L. Merrick, 51, died Thursday, July 12, 2001. Rex Graduated from Springfield College in Illinois in 1969 and with honors from the University of Illinois in 1974. He was accepted to the University of Chicago Law School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1970 and attended OCS. He attained the rank of sergeant and served in the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was self-employed. He is survived by two brothers; Jerry A. Merrick Sr. of Bushnell, and W. Joseph Merrick of Springfield, and a sister, Sharon J. Vinson of Springfield. He is buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

Paula Annette (Mohr) Shepard, 57, of Springfield passed away at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2007, at her home. She was born October 12, 1949, in Peoria, the daughter of Wilhelmina and Raymond Mohr. She married and divorced Ross Shepard, also of Springfield. Surviving are her parents, Wilhelmina and Raymond Mohr; and her daughter, Courtney Nicole Shepard. Paula owned and operated Kids Only, Inc. in Springfield since 2005, and had been an employee there since 1989.

Karen Sennings Gorda
Karen died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois. She was born Sept. 30, 1949 the daughter of Robert C. and Bessie Fortner Sennings. She married John Gorda Sept 30, 1989. She was a bookkeeper for Mansion View Lodge, Oak Crest Country Club, and Goodwill Industries for many years and owned and operated a home day care for 15 years. She is survived by her husband, John, a daughter Kristy Bietsch and two sons, Dan Forgas of Manassas, Va. and Steve Forgas of Stafford, Va. A loving wife and mother; we lost a dear friend and will miss Karen.

Raleigh died at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at his home. He was born Dec. 2, 1949, in Springfield, the son of Phillip and Kathleen Louise Danner Snow. He was preceded in death by his parents. A lifelong resident of Springfield, Raleigh was a carpenter with Carpenters Local 16 and a member of Southern View Chapel and Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 4. He is survived by his brother, Fred (wife, Janet) Snow of Springfield; several aunts and uncles; niece and nephew, Phillip Snow and Kelly (Brad) Pulliam, both of Springfield; a great-nephew, Hayden; and several cousins.

Mr. Joseph Spitale

Joseph Spitale, 100, of Springfield died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center. He was born July 27, 1905, in Calascibetta, Sicily, the son of Carlos and Caroline Chingotta Spitale. He married Elizabeth Nancarrow; she died in 1992.
Mr. Spitale graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1929, received a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan in 1933 and did his postgraduate studies at the University of Illinois, University of Colorado, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the Allis-Chalmers Fellowship in Engineering in 1958. He was a science teacher and freshman football coach at Springfield High School for 43 years, retiring in 1972. He was the author of two zoology laboratory manuals.
He was a member of West Side Christian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He served as a supply lay minister for 15 years. He also was a member of the National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, and the Springfield Nature League.

Mrs. Dorothy Temple

Dorothy E. Temple, 97, resident of Kewanee for the past two years, formerly of Springfield, died at 2:40 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 at Kewanee Hospital. Mrs. Temple was born Dec. 28, 1909, in Davenport, Iowa, daughter of John Irvin and Margaretta (Kelly) Lynch. She married John Foster Temple Sr. on March 20, 1937, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1980.
She is survived by a son, John F. (Mary) Temple of Carmel, N.Y.; a daughter, Margaret E. (Cully) Taylor of Kewanee; five grandchildren, Mary E. "Lisa" Strauss of Boulder, Colo., David C. Taylor of Galva, Julie Stan of Sandy Hook, Conn., Jennifer Temple of Carmel and John F. Temple III of Ossining, N.Y.; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Mrs. Temple graduated summa cam laude from the University of Illinois. Dorothy taught English and history at Fairfield Community High School in Fairfield in the 1950s. During this period, her husband, John Temple, and his brother, William Temple, owned and published the Wayne County Record, where she was a contributing editor. After the sale of the Record in 1962, Dorothy and John moved to Springfield, where she taught French at Springfield High School until her retirement and John became the editor for Rural Electric News. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the PEO and Kings Daughters, all of Springfield.

Linda Wallace Johnson
Linda passed away on September 3, 2008 at St. John's Hospital. The daughter of Kenneth and Marjorie Buhl Wallace, she was born in Springfield on March 5, 1949. Linda worked as a receiving clerk at Shopko for 24 years. She was a sweet, loveable woman who enjoyed reading, cooking, and especially spending time with her granddaughter. Preceded in death by her father, Linda is survived by her husband of 25 years, Danny; her mother, Marjorie of Springfield; her daughter, Cristy (husband, David) Coleman Boysel of Athens; her granddaughter, Sidnee Lane Boysel; siblings, Michael (Jeanne) Wallace of Springfield, Wendy (husband, Jerry) Fry of Petersburg, and K.C. (wife, Bing) Wallace of Taylorville; in addition to several nieces and nephews.

Mary Woods Smith
Mary E. Smith, 61, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009 at her home. Mary was born on November 30, 1947 in Springfield, the daughter of Samuel E. and Mary Bartlett Woods. She was married to Fred Smith. He preceded her in death. Mary worked for Brother James Court as a wing supervisor for more than 20 years. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and loved taking care of her German Schnauzer dogs. Also preceding Mary in death are her parents. She is survived by her brother, Herbert "Sam" Woods II of Springfield; her aunt, Betty T. Woods; and several cousins, including Martha Wolters and Sarah Pederson.

Bruce was drafted and trained as an Army infantryman. Arriving in South Vietnam on November 26, 1969, he was assigned to B Company, 123rd Aviation Bn, 16th Aviation GP, of the Americal Division in Quang Ngai Province south of Da Nang in the I Corps area of north central South Vietnam. Bruce was killed by small arms fire on September 1, 1970.
