1. Feedback/s and Contribution/s:

Sadhak Pariwar, BBC, CNN, MSNBC, Baban Prasad Kayastha, Hari Narayan Mandal, Yug Nath Ghimire and Friends.

Very much appreciate sending SA 96, 97 and 98 and thanks for taking the trouble. These SAs have always been a source of inspiration for me.Current SAs carry a varieties of entertainment, information and words of wisdom. I am very much impressed by words of wisdom expressed by Satyam Sadhak. The way the spiritual value of love is described is just superb. The comparison of flow of a river to that of a human life is a good simile. Poems both in Nepali and English are inspiring and thought provoking and poets deserve appreciation in penning down deep philosophical ideas in simple words. Einstein's quotes are more of spiritual value than his discovery in science. The joke on email is really amusing.

Very glad to receive SA 99. It is very infomative with current news and views. You may like to add in next SA regarding the only African lady to receive Nobel Peace Prize . She is Wangari Maathai from Kenya. She has been a great environmental activist and worked as a leader of Green Belt Movement.

She is currently Asst Minister in Kenya. She has helped planting 30 million trees across Africa. She was very much in news when I was in Kenya with my wife visiting our daughter. She had fought ceaselessly against deforestation and land grabbing. The then Predident of Kenya Arip Moi wanted to distribute a valuable forest land close to the city to his relatives. She bravely resisted that and continued fighting even after being wounded by Police men. She was put behind the prison but her followers flouted the authority of distributing the land. She has worked for empowering women and democracy in Africa for 30 years. She was chosen from among 196 candidates including such personalities as Bajpai, Musarraf and Bush. It was a pleasant surprise for her.

With best wishes,

BPK

v      Over smart cows will end up soon for nothing.

v      Care after the demise of patients is useless.

v      We can bless the god to save the life of the oxen, who are willing to jump from the cliff, but can not go beneath the cliff to save them.

v      Hope of ill gain is the beginning of loss.

v      It is what we learn after we think we know it all that counts.

v      A man who is at the top is a man who has the habit of getting to the bottom.

v      Happiness is a wine of the rarest vintage, and seems insipid to a vulgar taste.

v      Experience is a private, and a very largely speechless affair.

Kenyan ecologist wins Nobel prize

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3726024.stm

Wangari Maathai is the first African woman to win the prize
Kenyan environmentalist and human rights campaigner Wangari Maathai has won the Nobel Peace Prize.
She is the first African woman to be awarded the peace prize since it was created in 1901.

A surprised Mrs Maathai broke the news to reporters minutes before the official announcement.

The prize committee says Mrs Maathai, Kenya's deputy environment minister, is an example for all Africans fighting for democracy and peace.

The delighted 64-year-old professor said the award was completely unexpected.

"This is extremely encouraging to the people of Africa and the African woman," she told the BBC.

"It is a recognition of the many efforts of African women, who continue to struggle despite all the problems they face."

Social science

In the late 1970s Mrs Maathai led a campaign called the "Green Belt Movement" to plant tens of millions of trees across Africa to slow deforestation.

The movement grew to include projects to preserve biodiversity, educate people about their environment and promote the rights of women and girls.

I am working to make sure we don't only protect the environment, we also improve governance

Profile of Wangari Maathai

Mrs Maathai said she was delighted that the vital role of the environment had been recognised.

"The environment is very important in the aspects of peace because when we destroy our resources and our resources become scarce, we fight over that".

"I am working to make sure we don't only protect the environment, we also improve governance," she added.

The committee says she has combined science with social engagement and politics and has worked both locally and internationally.

'Honoured'

The professor was the 12th woman peace laureate since the first award was first made in 1901.

A spokesman for the Kenyan government said his country was honoured.

 Africa's peace laureates

2004 - Wangari Maathai, Kenya
2001- Kofi Annan, Ghana
1993 - Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk, South Africa
1984 - Desmond Tutu, South Africa
1960 - Albert John Lutuli, South Africa

"This is a great moment in Kenyan history. To us this shows that what Wangari Maathai has been doing here has been recognized," Alfred Mutua said.

"We're very proud of her and she deserves all the credit."

Mrs Maathai beat a record 194 nominations, including former Chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix and head of the UN energy watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, to win the prize.

Mrs Maathai is the second woman in a row to be awarded the peace prize which last year went to Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, for her work for the rights of women and children in Iran.

The award, which includes 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.3m) is awarded in Oslo on 10 December each year.

10. Note/s:

Interest and importance: Recall of a particular event or detail depends on the interest we take and the importance we assign to that detail or event, at the time when it is taking place. We remember so much more about people, places, and topics which fascinate us. When you are greatly interested in a subject, you pay close attention and your brain releases chemicals to form deeper "imprints" on the cells that store memory. Those can literally become "long lasting impressions."

Flu vaccine pulled, major shortage predicted

A top federal health official, lamenting "a very fragile vaccine production system," urged healthy people Wednesday to defer getting their influenza shots so medication will be available for those most at risk. British regulators unexpectedly shut down a major flu-shot supplier Tuesday, citing manufacturing problems at the Chiron Corp. factory in England where roughly 46 million doses destined for the United States had been made.
