1. Feedback/s and Contribution/s:

Social Science Baha, Travel Himalayas, DNPWC, Wilko Willemsen, Baban Prasad Kayastha and friends.

I have become very interested in a new concept to me, but which is very old to Buddhism. Here in the West everybody talks abouth BNP = Bruto National Product. But recently I enjoyed a vivid discussion on a mailing list of people with high IQ aged between 25 and 40 years old. It was about BNH =  Bruto National Happiness. Apparently it was the name of a documentary about Bhutan politics. But I learned from a colleague that Bhutan is very unfriendly with its inhabitants of Nepalese origin. But that’s just a critical observation...

I am really interested to discuss how making BNH the main political objective instead of BNP. I welcome any ideas....Here is one I learned from the documentary of Michael More: Bowling for Columbine. During the movie Michael learns one important lesson: the 12.000 murders in the USA are not caused by the widespread possession of guns only.

Canada has more guns per person but only 67 murders in 1 year....In USA the average American is as unhappy/happy as in 1948 while the BNP has more then ten folded.....In Canada big cities people have there front door loose/unlocked.....

The big difference between both cultures is that USA has a culture of making people afraid and then using this fear to market new products and politics. In Canada they have other selling techniques......

If you have good ideas about BNH send them to wilkowillemsen@hotmail.com

It is a real pleasure to go through the content of SA 107. I can find a lot of useful information in addition to poem, views, quotes, jokes etc. The poem by the eminent poet Siddhi Charan is very inspiring. He reminds us that only by suffering we can stand firm and be brave in this world. Some monumental works carried out by scientists are worth knowing. Moral lessons preached by SSS are valuable and worth emulating. Finally, I am very much appreciate the comprehensive coverage in this issue of SA 107. I am stunned at the attitude of US Govt. in not signing the Kyoto Protocol in spite of that fact that it is by far the biggest polluter. An international conference on climate change is currently being held in Argentina.

Best wishes,

BPK

Access to DELNET and PERI resources

Users of the on-line facilities at Social Science Baha Library can now access two new digital resources:

Social Science Baha Library is now a member of DELNET (Developing Library Network), a bibliographical database network based in New Delhi, India.

Baha also has access to a strong collection of full-text academic journal databases available to academic and non-profit research organizations in Nepal through the PERI (Programme for Enhancement of Research Information) project.

A) DELNET

DELNET (Developing Library Network) is an information-sharing network for libraries based in Delhi. DELNET compiles the library catalogue resources of all member libraries in its database. Every new member library adds its own database to the network. By accessing the network, a library user can search for information on books, journals, articles and other research-related materials not currently available to his/her institution. Currently 820 institutions participate in the Delnet network and Delnet users have access to more than three million bibliographical records. The lists of libraries whose bibliographical records we can access through the Delnet databases are available at http://www.delnet.nic.in/DeL_files/3feb.htm

DELNET also facilitates ILL (Inter Library Loan) through its online ILL facility. It coordinates between the member libraries so that the user at one library can borrow books and other materials, via the DELNET central hub, from another located in a different geographical area.

Currently, the following databases are accessible through DELNET:

a) Union Catalogue of Books,

b) Union List of Current Periodicals,

c) Union Catalogue of Periodicals,

d) CD-ROM Database,

e) Database of Indian Specialists,

f) Database of Periodical Articles,

g) Union List of Video Recordings,

h) Urdu Manuscripts' Database,

h) Database of Theses and Dissertations,

i) DEVINSA Database,

j) Sample databases of language publications using GIST technology, and other databases

Further information on the databases is available at http://www.delnet.nic.in/DeL_files/Services.htm

For its databases, DELNET uses its in-house software DELSIS developed on BASISPlus. For more information on DELSIS and other products of DELNET, please go to http://www.delnet.nic.in/DeL_files/Services.htm

BENEFIT from DELNET to BAHA LIBRARY USERS:

Through the use of Delnet, Social Science Baha Library users can:

a) Access the catalogues in the Delnet databases and get information on books and other resources they need

b) Locate the libraries that house these books and information

c) Order the book or photocopy of a portion of it using the Delnet Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service, or

d) Ask their library to add the book to its collection

B) PERI

PERI or Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information was started in 2001 through a partnership between a group of developing and transitional countries and INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) a UK-based cooperative network of organizations with research information needs. (http://www.inasp.info/peri/index.html)

PERI resources are currently available to Nepali libraries, colleges and non-profit academic organizations through funding from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Social Science Baha has registered for and has access to the following full-text journal databases and publishers:

1) EBSCO Host

Has 8 databases; 16500 abstracts; 10400 full-texts. Journals available cover all major academic faculties. (http://ejournals.ebsco.com/login.asp?bCookiesEnabled=TRUE)

Firefly in the Dark

A firefly in the dark

What a delightful companion

On a long journey

When the summit is still far away.

Seveal I had

Companions and fellow travelers

Left some behind at the foothill

Climbed some up on the top of the hill (Climbed up the hill the others)

(Neither could sorrow stop me, nor would woe)

Neither could anxiety nor woe stop me

Sometimes I reached on the cliff and

Sometimes I reached at ridge between two hillocks

On the way up and down during the journey.

(Reach I will sometimes the resting place

On the way up and on the way down.)

Confront I will many hazards and obstacles

A traveler, I will go on unraveling all

If your heart is on reaching the peak

Join me along, we be fellow travelers

As long as our hearts go together. (As long as we so desire.)

4. View/s:

v      Actually the happiness within us is the real heaven, which is found there where persons share and hear others anxieties and sorrow.

v      Work in the day in such a way, so that you can sleep sound on the bed, even on straw mattress at the night.

Work in the night in such a way so that you do not need to cover your face or, shape during the day or, light.

5. Moral/s:

To be a noble being is the only choice; to walk forward, it does not matter how far and difficult; to fly upward, it does not matter how far, or how high.  We just have to try again and again. <Try and try again until you die.>

Hari Om

Shree Sadhak Satyam

7. Satire/s or Joke/s:

Kanta (Resource person): After this training on Gender and Equity, what will you do, Officers?

Shyam (Participant): I will sleep later than my wife at night and wake up earlier than her so that she will have more opportunity to take rest.

****

President Dubya was awakened one night by an urgent call from the Pentagon.
"Mr. President," said the four-star general, barely able to contain himself, "there's good news & bad news."

"Oh, no," muttered the President, "Well, let me have the bad news first."

"The bad news, sir, is that we've been invaded by creatures from another planet."

"Gosh, and the good news?"

"The good news, sir, is that they eat reporters and pee oil."

9. Recall/s:

Agro Expo 2004

November 25-29. Nepal first agro expo was help in Birendra International Convention Center at New Baneshwor, Kathmandu.  The expo was very useful to all, especially farmers, students and nature loving people.  We enjoyed Sita Ram Milk Product, Flowers exhibition from different nurseries of the Kathmandu valley, especially Khadka Nursery of Maharajganj where Bonsai plants were under sale.

In spite of suf\ch impressive exhibition, I found there missing Late Dr. Gyan Lal Shrestha’s Green Energy Mission (GEM) to Nepal there.  If Dr Shrestha was alive he will be there with his smiling appearance.  I also found missing NEMACOL stall.  NEMACOL was a cooperative of more than 100 agriculturist experts and natural resources related officers of Nepal.

We would like to thank organizer Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Industries Promotion and Markets Development Direcorate and Agro Enterprise Center FNCCI: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
