do something

march 2001

Preliminary results, until I get time to do this page up properly: as of 2nd April, we were notified of $395 in donations to the Sierra Club and $750 to the League of Women Voters! Got a nice form-letter this afternoon (12th April) -- looks like the various birthday-related efforts swamped the poor guy's capacity to respond... ;)

For this month's Creative Protest action-drive, we'd like to do something nice in honor of Al Gore's birthday, March 31st:

Make a donation in Al's honor to either -- or both! -- of our selected Causes, and send him a birthday card announcing the gift at the address below.

We've chosen as the focus of this effort the League of Women Voters, in recognition of the [ahem!] Recent Difficulties, and the Sierra Club, longtime champions of the environment. Both of these organizations will take your donations on-line.

This is our first attempt at organizing a coordinated effort, so we're not sure how matters will proceed over the course of this month. We've decided to start simple by concentrating efforts on two specific Causes, the better to measure the effects; we hope to be able to contact these bodies shortly after the 31st and obtain whatever figures may be available regarding any change in giving levels over the month of March, and possibly to issue a press release if the totals are favorable.

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 during the height of the women's suffrage movement as a nonpartisan organization to promote voter education. Today the LWV is involved in the ongoing effort to address the sorry state of our electoral system. Their website suggests a minimum donation of $25.

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 as a society of nature lovers, and has since become one of the country's most recognized advocates for environmental issues. Their website suggests a minimum donation of $15.

Cards may be addressed to:

the Honorable Albert Gore, Jr.
Office of the Honorable Al Gore
PO Box 2346
Arlington, VA 22202

Al's birthday is Saturday, March 31st, so for cards to arrive in a timely fashion one ought to make one's arrangements during the week of the 19th-23rd -- earlier if one is snailmailing one's donation.

Important: if you've decided to participate in this Action by making a donation to either or both of our selected Causes, please let us know to which and in what amount! We hope to be able to keep a running tally of how this effort is proceeding (perhaps to be noted in our own card, if an impressive enough total has been racked up by the postal deadline) and we'd like to have some figures for our post-game analysis of this drive, sometime during the first week of April.

Why are we doing this? Well, the poor man's been through the wringer, and I thought it might cheer him up a little to know we're still thinking about him out here. For this reason, we've chosen a political Cause for those who wish to express themselves on this matter as a philosophical statement, and a personal Cause in the vein of those he espouses for those who simply wish him well.

donations to date:

League of Women Voters, $175

Sierra Club, $195

This website is the independent creation of a somewhat deranged mind and is not affiliated with any known political organization, real or imaginary, although said deranged mind does tend to vote Democratic. No actual harm is intended to Mr. Bush; we only want to poke a bit of fun at him. At press time, the selected Causes had not issued statements regarding this drive; we're not affiliated with them, they're not affiliated with us, and if anybody starts asking questions we're swallowing the microfilm and heading for Canada.
