July 7, 2008 Safehouse 1, Rebecca's office 0830 hours "They're in transit?" she asked him without looking up from the papers she read. "Yes," Gray said reading his own papers as he sat in front of her desk. They were expensive chairs, and comfortable enough, but he preferred his own chair and would have to insist the next meeting took place in his office. Course, with her being the boss she called the shots. "He's ready," he said looking up at her. Her brilliant gray eyes flicked up to rest on his. "I haven't decided which way we'll go with him." "I thought…we…decided to try the Watcher program." "Well…we…discussed it…" "He tracked one of our agents for weeks, undetected by both us and…" Gray swallowed. It was hard to even say Sebastian's name. It happened over a month ago and it still hurt…it still wasn't fair. "That doesn't make him a candidate for a Watcher position. Not to mention the animosity the Agents would feel towards him. He kills one of their own and we in turn put him in a power position over them?" "Right, but he will feel a sense of obligation to protect them…and that's what we need, that connection between the Watcher and the Agent so he will want to protect them." As strange as it sounded it did make sense and Rebecca couldn't even argue it. Gray had been talking with Tarnes exclusively and the detective certainly was remorseful for his role in killing Sebastian. That remorse could be turned into duty, a want and desire to gain the hardest of all emotions to come by…forgiveness. And what better way to do that then to protect those you wish it from? Rebecca stared at him and Gray could see her mind working on what he said and the points he tried to make. "He goes through the training." "Of course," he nodded. That was to be expected. "The Agents aren't to know…he starts with Bella." That was not. "The Agents should know…at least Jordan, Paige, and Safara." "I don't agree. Not in the initial phase anyway. In time, they will know, but I think they need to straighten themselves out first. They still harbor a lot of emotion with regards to Sebastian's death." And so her position as Director and the wisdom by which she earned it was realized by him once again. "Agreed," he said nodding his head. "And you'll be meeting with Sark today?" Rebecca asked returning to her papers. "Yes, our last meet," he said slyly. She looked up smiling, "so, today is the day?" He grinned back, "and he'll never see it coming." "You are enjoying working in the field aren't you?" Rebecca grinned back. "It's nice, I have to admit, to be doing something besides pushing papers," he said casually, "no offense," he offered quickly. She waved her hand with a smile, "I have no desire to go back in the field. It's a different game then when I used to play." "It's not so different. I mean, different players…but the game itself… it never changes. But it is nice, rather refreshing to get into the field. I've been working Sark for two months now, it will be nice to bring him in." "He is a valuable commodity." "Yes, he is. But first, we have these budget concerns." They discussed boring budget details for a full hour before he was finally free to begin his day. Tarnes was first… Return |
