Elderly Instruments
The Pride of Lansing, Elderly Instruments is situated in Old Town, an area
now flirting with revitalization. No matter. This is the
greatest musical instrument store in the world! Banjos, guitars, and mandolins are just the
beginning, but they're a nice start. I've fooled around with the banjos there once a week
for probably the last two years, and no one's ever yelled at me. (I also bought my Bart Reiter there, too.)
In addition to the instruments, a fantastic collection of CDs, tapes, videos, books, and magazines
are on the 1st floor.
One of the best things, and ongoing, is the series of concerts Elderly hosts. Once a week
or so, EXCELLENT performers on their way through town, stop by, browse the store, and put on
a show. This stuff is FREE and open to the public. When you click the link below, be sure to check out
the Special Events Calendar.
Another cool deal, are the workshops conducted by folks who are tops in the
craft. Reasonable prices for a couple hours of instructions; stuff that holds up
over the years.
If you want more regular tutoring than the workshops offer, music instructors, with lots of talent, work out of the
lower level. The lower level is where you'll find the repairshop, as well.
I really like this place! But I've said too much already. The link's below.
Oh, and after you've visited the store and cash register, don't forget to
go out back and take in the waterfalls. That's the "fish ladder" across the river (more on
that some other time). (Picture below.)
Plunkety, plunk, plink!
