This is in no way considered to be complete - but may help you get started.
Four to six weeks before breeding - start feeding nestling food and crushed egg-shells from eggs which have been boiled at least twenty minutes. Always have plenty of dark greens. Be sure to include some form of vitamins - liquid AVITRON is excellent when mixed with drinking water.
Set up hen only when she is in top condition. She should be active, tight-feathered, bright-eyed, fat, have swollen vent, and stomach will probably be bare of feathers.
Do NOT set up any hen who has been ill, has had a hard time during molt, who is wheezing, or is puffy.
After first egg - take it out carefully - replace with marble. Continue removing newly laid egg each day until four have been laid.
After the fourth egg, you may carefully lift out nest and insert nest-liner (optional), apply mite powder, replace nest, including all the eggs (no Marble) then replace entire nest in cage for setting.
Be sure to write down date eggs are set - and when they are due - 14 days.
Do NOT change the position of the cage once the hen has started setting.
Do NOT disturb hen and babies unless necessary.
Do NOT work in the breeding room longer than necessary once babies hatch.
Banding should be done when babies are seven to nine days old.
Mites may be detected by the color of the babies' mouth. Healthy babies will have red mouths - lighter mouths denote mites.
Babies generally are feeding themselves and can be removed to separate cage at age of six weeks.
Do NOT let hen have more than two clutches.
A green bird can be mated with any color; White is best when used with yellow; Red or red-orange is best with red-orange or red frost.
Always try to use a hard - feather to a frost; you get a bigger & better bird.
NEVER mate two crested birds.
Usually the hen carries the size - the male carries the color.
