  Why Jon Rosenberg doesn't have a credit here though he is listed as a source supplier on early inlays?

  From John Chrisman:
  Jon R. didn't supply the tracks. Only Andre did. Jon R. volunteered to provide the source tape for me, but in the end he couldn't because his tape deck died on him. Andre then remade the source tape for me. I'm not sure if Gerhard supplied any tracks on it either, but I'm sure if you asked Andre, he could tell you. This is the sequence of events as I recall them: Andre made a tape for Ed. Ed liked it and suggested it be a tree. Gerhard agreed. I volunteered to administer the tree. Jon R. volunteered better sources but in the end could not provide them. Andre supplied source tapes to myself and Gerhard. The rest is history...

Original announcement

After reading Ed 'Kahuna' Sander's write-up on Echoes about the tape he received from Andre and his suggestion that a tree be made of it, I decided to volunteer my services and administer this tree. I e-mailed Gerhard and Andre and they have agreed to supply the source tapes so... YES, we are going to have another tree.

All of the songs chosen are 'special' from some reason. Most haven't been played too often (The Violent Sequence, Childhoods End e.g.) or the performance is totally different from any other occasion (E.g. The Embryo)

Of course the tracklist will raise a discussion on "Why isn't this or that song included, too?". We know, there are many more songs out there that could have been included on this tape. But (as always) life means making choices and these were the choices made for this tape. Perhaps in the future we may come up with a volume two. For now, this particular selection was made so it could fit on one tape. Who knows, if demand justifies it, we may release a "Return Of The Sons Of The Good, The Rare and The Scary".

The soundquality isn't quite 'hi-fi full surround Dolby S Pro Stereo' (if you know what I mean), but for some of these songs it's the only version available (and it is listenable)

Set list

• The Embryo (28.00) - Taft Auditorium, Cincinnati, Ohio, 20-Nov-71
  The legendary super long version. Embryo has had many faces on different shows. This sure was a song the band used to change from time to time. Sometimes is was just a 3-4 minutes song which got extended to 10-12 minutes. This one is the longest version ever. Almost half an hour of jamming!

• The Violent Sequence (23.00) - Town Hall, Birmingham, UK 11-Feb-70
  This piece alledegy was written for the Zabriski-point movie, but never made it into the movie, nor on any record. This track is the only 'complete' performance of this musical piece available. Well, at least what we suspect as complete. (The version on Total Eclipse and Waters Gate is from a different performance and is only the last part of the complete song).

  It starts with the Heart Beat Pig Meat drums and later goes into an experimental bit followed by a piano part without much melody. The track then goes into Moonhead and ends with the beautiful keyboards coda out of which Us and Them originated.

• Libest Spacement Monitor (20.30) - Royal Albert Hall, London 26-Feb-71
  This starts with a raving experimental bit in which bits of Interstellar can be detected. Then it goes into Moonhead, followed by The Embryo. The title for this song is most likely an invention of roio-makers. At the beginning Roger announces the drummer of the band as 'Ladies And Gentleman, Mr. Nicholas Mason'. Apperently a roio-maker misheard this and thought (s)he heard 'Libest Spacement Monitor'.

• Obscured by Clouds/When You're In (12.30) - Sportatorium, Hollywood 28-Jun-73
  This version is far better and very different from the version I (i.e. ED) have on 'Obscured at the Rainbow'. The WYI melody is much more recognisable and the middle piece features a jam not unlike the On The Run Jam version. This show was a very 'tough' show as the audience was very annoying (almost rioting).

• Childhood End (7.30) - The Amphiteatre Chicago 7-Mar-73
  Unfortunately the vocals are very far in the background. A shame really because the live version sounds excellent, complete with improvised middle piece. How unfortunate that they didn't play this more often. Records show that the band may have played this on only 5 or 6 occasions.

• Main Theme from More (10.00) - Town Hall Birmingham 11-Feb-70
  Long version of the More track. Also a tune played only a couple of times in the 1970-ies.
