Cyberspace: A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions
of legitimate operators, in every nation.
Clintonspace - sort of like cyberspace, but with more smoke, mirrors,
blind alleys, and more advertising added.
Genuinely skillful use of obscenities is uniformly absent on the Internet.
I worry about my child and the Internet all the time, even though she's too
young to have logged on yet. Here's what I worry about. I worry that 10 or 15
years from now, she will come to me and say 'Daddy, where were you when they
took freedom of the press away from the Internet?'
I use to think that cyberspace was fifty years away. What I thought was
fifty years away, was only ten years away. And what I thought was ten years
away... it was already here. I just wasn't aware of it yet.
In the real world it takes a hell of a lot of work to get published, which
naturally weeds out a lot of the garbage. On the net, just a few keystrokes
sends your writing to thousands of readers.
Information Superhighway is really an acronym for "Interactive Network
For Organizing, Retrieving, Manipulating, Accessing And Transferring Information
On National Systems, Unleashing Practically Every Rebellious Human Intelligence,
Gratifying Hackers, Wiseacres, And Yahoos".
Internet advertising gives smaller companies the ability to compete
effectively. I do believe larger companies are unhappy about that.
Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people
it is a complete substitute for life.
Looking at the proliferation of personal web pages on the net, it looks
like very soon everyone on earth will have 15 Megabytes of fame.
Mosaic is the 1990's equivalent of forcing friends to sit through slides
of your trip to Florida -- painful for everyone but the host.
Surfing on the Internet is like sex; everyone boasts about doing more than
they actually do. But in the case of the Internet, it's a lot more.
The Internet is like a box of chocolates.
The Internet is like a giant jellyfish. You can't step on it.
You can't go around it. You've got to get through it.
The Internet is like a vault with a screen door on the back. I don't need
jackhammers and atom bomb to get in when I can walk through the door.
The Net is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it.
Trying to control information in the information age is about as successful
as pissing into the wind.
2.5 million use America Online. That's like a city. Parents wouldn't want
their kids go wandering in a city of 2.5 million people without them, or without
knowing what they're going to be doing.
URLs are the 800 numbers of the 1990's.
With the development of the Internet...we are in the middle of the most
transforming technological event since the capture of fire. I used to think
that it was just the biggest thing since Gutenberg, but now I think you have
to go back farther.
