It was January 1996 when I learned about NetDay96 when reading San Jose Mercury News. I soon found their home page and signed up for volunteering at Toyon Elementary School. Toyon is a K5 in Berryessa Union School District (K12). Prior to the first national event of NetDay96 on March 9, I exchanged several e-mail and phone calls with Mr. Jack Owens, Principal of Toyon. They had already wired Ethernet 10BaseT connections into the Library, 3 classrooms and the Principal's office. They also have a home page live off a Web server in the School District office.
Mr. Owens asked me to monitor activity of the PC in the Library and assist young visitors to browse the Web or write an e-mail to the President of US on March 9. Although 12 classrooms have not been wired, the School District decided to use this opportunity to demonstrate the home pages and how surfing the Web can be educational and interesting to students and their parents.
