What the heck is MIDI ?

MIDI, computer interpretted music, stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. MIDI files are just coded instructions that inform the soundcard which instrument sound to produce at which note for how long. MIDI is also a standard communications protocol that allows electronic musical instruments to 'talk' to each other. Most PC soundcards use a method known as FM Synthesis where different instrument sounds are created through algorithms.
In general speaking, MIDI is the sound file that you can listen to. In order to listen to these MIDI files your IBM compatible computer must have a soundcard and MIDI drivers. You can get much better performance and quality if your soundcard has Wavetable capabilities. Such cards generate the music through sampled instruments rather than complete synthesis; the result is a more natural, realistic sound and better mixing.

If you have , then you just point and click on those files, and IE 3.0 will automtically play for you. (Go back and listen now.)

I am using other browers(like Netscape) and I can't play those music files.

Well, follow my steps below and you will be OK.
  1. You can go to Crescendo to get the Midi plugin for your browser to play.
  2. If you are using Windows95, you can get the plugin free from Windows95, here is what you need to do:
    • Click on the options of your browser, then select General Preferences
    • The Preference window will pop up, then you click on the Creat new type button.
    • You will see another window pops up, then you type Music or Sound or whatever you like on the first field( which says Mime type).
    • Then on the Mime Subtype field, you need to type exactly as this: mid , then click 'ok'.
    • At last, you need to click on that little round button which says Launch the application, and then you type C:\WINDOWS\Mplayer.exe (C is your hard drive, if not, type your own).
    • That's it, you can listen to my collection now.
