Takani Megumi is a beautiful woman which even Kenshin feels obliged to help her even though it was kind of a hostile situation when they first met ^_^ while not a kind of affection but just a duty or motto which Kenshin always beholds (to help the innocent).

Megumi comes from a renowned medical family and was separated from her family during wartime (I will not come to that). By a twist of fate, she was forced to help a damn ass criminal to concoct opium. The consequences of releasing opium into the innocent civilization caused many deaths including Sanosuke's buddy (I will not come to that either).

It was till some time later that Kenshin managed to save Megumi from the clutches of Takeda Kanryuu and that was the time Megumi decided to use her medical skills in helping the people in bid to relieve or compensate her sins of making opium in the past

Megumi became the part of Kenshin's clan (haha) and from now and then come over to have dinner or steamboat. She also tends to any injuries Kenshin and other ones like Sano might induced by fighting.
