Race Statistics - 1997 Season

1. Adelaide, Australia

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 2nd 61/61 3/2 2 1 1m 16.429
This race saw only two real incidents. They both were spins and the second one happened with Lars in the lead ten laps from the finish line and resulted in a lost front wing. Lars played it safe and went in for a third pit stop to get a new wing. This dropped him down to third, but with two laps remaining Lars snached second place from Villeneuve.
Stefan Jonsson DNF 10/61 -/2 - 1 1m 16.324
The Australian nightmare continues... With the memory of last season's race fresh in his mind, Stefan was hoping for a better result this time. But mastering the pit exit chicane - that took him out last year - didn't help much. This time his gearbox failed as early as on lap 11 and he couldn't get it out of neutral gear.

2. Interlagos, Brazil

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 17th 51/53 3/2 11 1 1m 18.036
This was not going to be an easy task. The very small amount of setup and training left Lars with a car that should put him off-track more than is healthy. And it most certainly did. Lars visited the country side a record braking eleven times!
Stefan Jonsson 6th 53/53 2/2 1 - 1m 18.892
Using the same car setup as Lars obviously gave Stefan the same problems as his team mate. In spite of this Stefan only had one single spin, but with a car handling as bad as this he couldn't possibly keep up with the fastest drivers and had to settle with 6th place.

3. Jerez, Spain

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 1st 52/52 2/2 - - 1m 24.003
This was perhaps Lars' best race of his GP2RL career! Except for the odd slide under braking, everything went smoothly and according to plan. This resulted in the 6th fastest Pro time and 1 additional "F1 Point".
Stefan Jonsson 1st 52/52 3/2 1 1 1m 23.744
One big mistake did nearly cost Stefan his first victory of the season: The lap after his first scheduled pitstop he followed two cars into the last corner before the s/f-line. When trying to brake past the last of the two, he braked way too late and smashed into the first car ahead and broke his front wing. And when leaving the pit lane one lap later, Stefan could easily had lost his rear wing as well when Ralf Schumacher gave him a hard push. Luckily this incident only reslulted in a spin.

4. Imola, San Marino

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson DNF 30/46 1/2 1 - 1m 23.629
Nothing much to say about this one really. Stefan (stand-in driver for Lars this race) was going fine in the lead some 12 seconds ahead of Villeneuve when the otherwise so reliable Volvo engine blew...
Stefan Jonsson 1st 46/46 2/2 1 1 1m 23.892
In spite of a damaged front wing and a spin at Aqua Minerale, Stefan was never under any real threat this time. The incident at Aqua Minerale luckily came on his inlap to his first pit stop so the pit stop strategy could be kept.

5. Monte-Carlo, Monaco

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 3rd 59/59 2/2 1 2 1m 20.797
A race very well carried through by Lars considering the fact that he only put down a handful of practice laps before he started his official race. Unfortunately he broke his front wing just after his first pit stop and then took the somewhat brave (foolish?) decision to continue without it until the next scheduled stop.
Stefan Jonsson 1st 59/59 2/2 1 - 1m 19.532
Stefan surely had more than a handful of barrier touches, but those much dreaded barriers couldn't stop him this time. Nor could anything else. Stefan soon found a fast enough race rythm without having to push too hard. This gave him a confortable win with over a minute from second placed Villeneuve.

6. Barcelona, Spain

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson DNF 15/49 -/2 1 - ?
Less than an hour of practice going into the race shouldn't be enough, because those high speed chicanes takes some getting used to before you can turn in and out of them with a confident feeling at 200 kph. Hit that curbe on the turn-in and you're flying! And that was exactly what what happened to Lars this race. A fairly quick retirement.
Stefan Jonsson 3rd 49/49 2/2 3 - 1m 23.946
Stefan's concentration surely wasn't at it's best this time. He had numerous slides and outings in the grass (managed to keep out of the sand though!) which ment loosing time both here and there. After his final pit stop he was down on 5th place but worked his way up to the front runners, and on the very last lap he was very much in reach of first position. But instead of crossing the finish line as a winner, he had an irritating little spin which dropped him down a place to 3rd.

7. Gilles Villeneuve, Canada

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 1st 52/52 2/2 - 1 1m 22.103
Everything went according to schedule, except for one trashed front wing, but fortunately it happened on the inlap to his first pit stop so it didn't made him loose much time.
Stefan Jonsson 3rd 52/52 2/2 1 1 1m 21.421
Stefan was well in the lead when disaster struck at lap 24. Building up for an overtake after the fast right-left-right (where Panis crashed out) Stefan came onto the curbe too hard and couldn't keep the car from spinning out into the gravel trap at high speed. When the car finally came to a halt it was missing a left front wheel. Here Stefan was very lycky to get out of the gravel and when he had crawled back to the pits and out again he was down to 14th place. But in spite of having to put on a load of 30 laps of fuel Stefan fought bravely and at the very end managed to place himself on the podium.

8. Magny Cours, France

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 10th 54/54 3/2 2 1 1m 20.203
Lars had quite an eventful race this time. It started out just fine with Lars taking the lead pulling away slowly but surely. But then during a ten lap period starting on lap 13 lots of stuff hapened which made him drop down to 15th. He broke his front wing (a third unscheduled pit stop required), he had a couple of outings in the gravel, and he even had to stop and reverse as a car was blocking the track at Adelaide bend. A tenth place was his at the end.
Stefan Jonsson 2nd 54/54 2/2 - - 1m 19.581
This was the closest and toughest race of the season for Stefan. He could never really shake of the chasing pack and had Villeneuve right up his gearbox for the main part of the race. But the pressure was finnaly too much for our driver to handle. With nine laps remaining Villeneuve slip streamed Stefan on the long straight and had the inside line at the following hair pin. There was nothing Stefan could do as he saw himself pushed down to second place.

9. Silverstone, Great Britain

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 2nd 45/45 3/2 2 1 1m 25.871
If it wouldn't have been for a broken front wing at the latter stage of the race, Lars would most certainly had collected his third win of the season. Instead he lost out by only a fraction of a second as he couldn't make it past Villeneuve on the last lap.
Stefan Jonsson 12th 44/45 4/2 3 3 1m 26.068
What a crappy day! When in the lead on lap 10 Stefan hit the curbe to hard at Club and broke his front wing and was down to 15th. Eight laps later he was up to 3rd when he had grass contact on the s/f-line and got thrown into Villeneuve and lost his right front wheel. Down to 19th. A couple of pit stops and spins later, his engine called it a day at the latter part of the track. But Stefan didn't give up and cruised whithout power in neutral gear down the whole pit lane and just managed to reach his pit crew. 20th and last place! This made Stefan furious and on the remainder of the race he broke his track record several times and finished in a more respectable 12th place.

10. Hockenheim, Germany

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 8th 34/34 2/1 4 2 1m 46.692
A couple of spins here and there and suddenly your totally out of contention. Keeping concentration on this track can be quite hard with those long relaxing straights. Well, Lars couldn't and finished 8th.
Stefan Jonsson 12th 34/34 2/1 1 1 1m 47.827
Stefan had two rather time consuming incidents. The first occurred at lap 7 and corner 1 where Stefan drove on the curbe a tad too much. When the car bounced back on the track Stefan couldn't keep it there and was quickly returned to the grass. After several pirouettes the car bounced back out on the track again, right out in the heavy traffic! Stefan was of course hit by another car (no damage though) and was once again throwed into a spin and out in the grass. This dropped Stefan down from 2nd to 15th place. The other drawback happened when leaving the pits after the one and only planned pit stop. Just when shifting to 6th gear the words ELECTRICAL PROBLEM flashed up on the dashboard. Back to the pits again, using only 6th gear. After this Stefan fought as hard as he could, but 12th place was end result.

11. Hungaroring, Hungary

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson 4th 58/58 3/2 6 2 1m 19.809
Lars was really flying this time. When he wasn't visiting the gravel traps or the pits that is. Although he had numerous incidents he fought himself back and nearly managed a podium finish. Instead he had to settle with 4th.
Stefan Jonsson DNF 5/58 -/2 2 1 -
Stefan said before the race that he felt a DNF coming up. He was right and it really was what was to be expected. He hadn't driven a single practice session since the last season's race, he was nearly out of time (due to electrical problems with the steering device), and he was hit by the flu. A comparison with his last year's pole time - nearly two seconds slower - indicated what was about to happen. On lap 5 he spun at the exit of a high speed corner and when he came to a stand still his car was cut in half by Eddie Ervine's Ferrari.

12. Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium

Driver Pos Laps Completed Pitstops Spins/Off-track Damages Fastest Lap
Lars Arvidsson DNF 4/33 -/2 - 1 -
Oh well... Nothing much to say really. The upgrade to the new Volvo V10-200m2x engine didn't go as planned. The mechanics worked overtime to get everything sorted out, which they finally did. But it didn't leave the drivers with much time to train and set up the car properly for their debut race at Spa-Francorchamps.
Stefan Jonsson DNF 3/33 -/2 - 1 -
Oh dear... That's two in a row now. Stefan really has to get his act together or he will probably be out of a ride for the next season!
