Watch Recommendations

The Answer is not 42. It's 44 mm.

The least expensive watches I see on most everyone's wrists are not really worthwhile IMHO. When the battery dies on them, one might as well buy a new watch and throw away the old one. It's a waste, especially when there are affordable, readily accessible, watches that are much higher in quality (and that you can even pass down to your children). But I guess when it comes down to it, reasoning aside, I enjoy watches, and you too can develop an appreciation for quality timepieces.

Brands

I do not think anyone should buy anything less expensive than a Citizen. Get a Seiko, any Seiko, if you can afford it. Citizen and Seiko also produce some very nice watches with automatic movements. I like the 'diver's' watches offered by both companies. This basically means anything with a 10 ATM or 100 meter water resistance rating or above. I'd put Orient along with these two in a lot of ways. The only problem I have with these 'inexpensive' watches is many of the less expensive ones have bracelets with folded links. Even on my mostly hairless arms I find these are a problem.

Fossil's are stylish, inexpensive, and of good quality. The Fossil Defender is nicely finished and has a reliable automatic movement. These come with a thick, comfortable, leather strap.

Less accessible, but 'best buy' IMO, are Invicta watches. On eBay they sell like hotcakes. I own an Invicta 9307, which looks very similar to a Rolex Submariner. I will likely purchase a 9937 in the future. You really get a lot of watch for the money when you buy an Invicta.

Perhaps a close contender for 'best buy' are Poljot watches. The finishes on these Russian watches have to be seen and felt to be appreciated. And they essentially have Swiss movements. Who else makes a mechanical lunar chronograph that sells for $250? My favorite watch is the Poljot Aviator Amphibian, a military-style mechanical watch which sells for under $75. Add a Kevlar strap, and you have a timepiece that defines me as a person(!).

On the other hand, one can completely ignore current fashion trends and purchase a Vostok. I have a Vostok Amphibia, the ugliest watch I've ever owned, and it's virtually indestructible. These are very inexpensive, rugged, watches, and they're 'different' if you like that. The bracelets on these watches are to be avoided like the plague, however. Spend a little bit more for a high quality leather strap. Here's a picture of, IMHO, the prettiest Amphibia.

If you prefer digital watches, I suggest you buy nothing less than any one of the various models of the Casio G-Shock.
