This site is full of music stuff you can use on your computer. I was quite amazed. They have what you call "soft synths". These are small programs which emulate real drum machines and keyboards using your computer and sound card. They also have a forum for discussion and 2nd hand selling of instruments. I have learnt that you really can do just about everything musical on a computer:
- multi-track studio recording (using sound card and hard disk)
- sequencing or MIDI music(composing and reproducing band and orchestral music [on the computer])
- sound editing
- sound effecting (adding echoes and special effects)
- the list goes on
This is the home of the shareware audio editor "GoldWave". This is the best low cost shareware sound editor I could find (so far).
If you know of another, drop me a line.
This is a spin-off from the product above. It is written by the same guy, but this software is for multi-track audio recording (studio-like recording). You can do some serious stuff with this program!
Now this is some seriously SERIOUS recording software! The price varies depending on where you go. For example, here in New Zealand it costs around the $1,000 mark, where-as some U.S stores sell it for around $250 U.S. (about $500 NZ after conversion). On a Pentium 200 with 64 MB RAM you can do tracks and tracks of audio. I on the other hand don't have one of those. In fact, I don't even have Cubase VST - I just know it's a juicy piece of music/recording software. Also, it will score music for you, as well as allow you to control your synthesisers, drum machines and external effects units via MIDI.
This is the web site of a New Zealand computer store called, you guessed it, "Advantage Computers". The thing I like about this site is that it has some interesting articles about computers and add-ons. Check it out by visiting this link and selecting "Information" from their menu bar.
This is full of articles and reviews about computer hardware - great if you want to get a better understanding of things like "Over-clocking a CPU".
Now this is a great site if you want to find software for a particular task but want to try it first or not pay too much for it. Either way, you'll probably find it at Shareware.com. Try their search engine!

Who says there aren't viruses for Unix? Check out these papers if you want to be more aware of these little infections.
