Fresh out of Boot Camp, I came aboard on Chrismas 1970 in Villafrance. I will forever remember those long, cold nights on Station 3, "dragging the line", being the signalman, winch operator, and finally rig captain, refueling one destroyer at a time,usual
y getting done around 0330, just in time to go on the 4-8 watch on the bridge or worst yet, sweepers. It was great to here from you Red Dog.

I was one of the many pre-commissioning crew of the Seattle. Had MANY, MANY, MANY good and memorable times on board & ashore. Loved Bremerton, Port Arthur (neat pitch & putt golfing), The Jewel of the Northwest - SEATTLE, Sand Diego & environs, our days
in Acapulco (the Coco Locos on the Beach), the trip thru the Panama Canal (had to remove scuppers to fit), the trip up the Mighty Miss to three days in New Orleans, then around Florida stopping in Mayport, and then to homeport - Norfolk.
Was throttleman (I think #2 ER) for her first trip to sea from Bremerton. Of course on board for her commissioning (a plankowner). I read a message from a gunner that he fired her first shell. I have one of the first 10 casings fired. Made into an
shtray.
Went on three Med cruises aboard her. Have promised my wife of 25 years that I will take her to Augusta Bay, Sicily to the little restaurant that had an oven in the corner and served the WORLDS BEST PIZZA! so that she will know what real pizza is.
nd, then hope to take her to Mykonos, Greece to see Pete the Pelicans grandchildren and those stark white buildings against the lush green hillsides, and the colorful fleet of fishing boats.
Christmas in Villefrance & Nice; New Years at the palace of Prince Ranier and Princess Grace; a little bar in San Remo, Italy; Barcelona; Naples; Herculeum & Pompeii; the wonderful people everywhere; the food best ordered in the little restaurants
that are operated by their owners & families; Greece, my favorite place in the world; I remember them. I remember the shipmates and the good times. I also remember the hard work we did underway. But, somehow the port calls made up for it.
I still live at the place that some shipmates visited during my service years and after I was discharged. The Cheri-Lee Motel is long gone, but the McIntosh family is still there.
Hope to re-establish contact with some old shipmates/friends. Don't consume the Boones Farm, and beer like we did then. But, not opposed to tipping a glass of good Scotch with old friends either.
