I was assigned to U.S.S Seattle out of boot camp(Orlando- company 22). Ialso am a plankowner. On the day of her commisoning, I stood the very first pier watch. Quite impressive, there was a lot of brass and dignataries taking part in the ceremony. And as
remember(if you know anything about the city of Seattle) it was raining lightly. I have some fond memories of that summer we spent in the pacific northwest and the years that followed, however, every one assigned to her knows she was a working ship. When
Aug. 18, 1972 came around, I was ready to walk away from her, and I did. Thanks Bill! Good job!

Seattle was my first ship. I was always glad she wasn't an aircraft carrier. I told my detailer I requested a destroyer...I did however eventually make it to Diego Garcia.

My dad (Virgil Snyder) was the commanding officer of the Seattle in the late 1970's. I was wondering if anyone served with him or remembered him. Thanks

I really would like to hear feedback. I'm very excited to come acrocc this page. Some of my beat times and most treasurable times were spent aboard the seattle. Friendships second to none, being underway and hearing the roar or the boilers during light of
was great. My heart will always be with the seattle, haze gray and underway. Please respond. When I left the ship they were out of ball caps and pictures, how much I would love to have them. So I would like to send you money to purchase them for me and t
send them. Please let me know if you can. Thanks shipmate.

It's great to see that someone has taken the time to put this site together, thanks. I am a plank owner and one of the nucleus crew. I worked out of the oil shack and my name was put on a plaque there along with the rest of the plank owners who were ass
gned to the oil shack. After the ship was handed over to the Navy by the Bremerton Naval Shipyard, we steamed her to Long Beach,Ca. for two weeks of underway training. WE then went to San Diego,Ca. for another two weeks for more underway training. Afte
that, we went to Acapulco, Mexico for three days. Then through the Panama Canal. We then steamed up the Mississippi to New Orleans for three days. Then on to our home port, Norfolk, Va. We were welcomed there in November of 1969, and what a welcome i
was, a Navy yard tugboat put a large gash in our port side in our fuel bunkers. What a mess. We pumped our liquid load to the starboard tanks which put us on quite a list and placed the gash above the waterline so that they could work on it. During my
time on the ship, we went to the "Med" twice and to the Caribbean several times. The crew was great. I had a good time, thanks to them. I hope to hear from some of them. Joe.

I was an RM3 when I left the Seattle,(leaving
active duty),but went in the Reserves and am now
an RM1, AND recently got a "NAM", and was made
assistant LPO of the RM division; Guess I came a
long ways since my days of "haze gray and under-
way" with the Seattle. I think what you're doing
is really cool, and I recognized a few names here
and there. Good luck to you!

When I reported to Seattle she was on blocke in a drydock in the old Brooklyn Naby Yard and looked orange from the red lead she was painted with. I can remember thinking that I must have been at the wrong place...no US Navy ship was orange!
