Trying to decide on drive train for a (first) town n touring rig.

I have various 8-speed components that would be nice to use. Ive also used half-step gearing on a road (2-chainwheel) outfit, and liked it.

In 85 when writing to bob klein to build a performance al frame I specified halfstep... 13-34, 26-46-50. not since have I seen the discussion of how the industry has made components for thinkers and bikers unavailable easily... gee it was good to see your site, I printed it and will try to get my new wheels up 2 snuff... tony

the klein did the death ride 3X with me on top and I never wanted for a gear... and then I was 40. I’ll do it in a few yrs at 60.

Hi Dave

I’ve seen also your touring pages and the nice pictures youve posted. I know how it feels actually being there and riding on your bike.

I’ve not toured very extensively in Ca except the different century rides I’ve done...

I read with great interest your article about fitting XTR to your road bike. Actually I’m thinking of a similar scenario, and it’s adding drop-down, road-like handlebars to my mountain bike that I use mostly for commuting.

Thanks!

At the end of your discussion, you don’t see the sense of a 26 to 34 step on a cassette. I adhere to that design myself, although not with so much space. I swap out the largest cog on a cassette with the largest available cog that will fit.

The reason is to have a bail-out gear. Your comment about 12% grades is exactly the point. Such grades are rare in most places, but I want to be capable. Also I may be exhausted or riding into a wind plus grade, or temporarily off-roading.

The same principle is used in some truck gearing. In addition to the running gears there is a crawler.

Looks great Dave. The banners are not bad; I’ve learned to ignore them. At least you got rid of the pop-ups. I’ll have Jeannie check it out tonight.

Great! Dave, your German links are better than mine – and I live in Germany – and surf daily! Ill add your link list to my bookmarks.

Probably, I have more links to SF Bay Area ;-)

Very interesting. I had no idea you were so involved with the German language.

Any chance of getting some edited versions of your transcontinental bike trip – maybe monthly installments?
