The Sherwood S-1000 integrated amplifier series was first
developed and marketed in the mid-fifties. As was the case with
most other Sherwood models a technical evolution took place from
the start. There were changes in design and production almost
every year.
Electronics designers at that time had a genuine problem -
the different standards and equalizartion curves that had to
be catered for in the pre-amp sections. Development was fast,
with new standards evolving all the time. There were several
standards for turntable cartridges, both for different systems,
as well as variations within the same system.
The S-1000 had one control knob dedicated to the various equalization
curves, as well as a row of knobs catering for various input
selections.
The rear view ofthe S-1000 shows the layout of the transformers
and power output tubes. To the right are the input jacks. The
horisontal placement of the output tubes made possible the slim
design that became one of the trademarks of Sherwood. At later-model
Sherwoods this was modified. Obviously, there were practical
problems having tranformers and tubes hanging out like that.
If for nothing else - the gravity.
It was also made in mk. II and III-versions.
The S-1000 had a tube compliment of 9. In the pre-amp section:
EF86, 12AX7's and 12AU7. Rectifier: 5Y3GT and power tubes: 2
6L6GB's. It yielded 20 watts. |
