Tripletone Products

The Concerto speakers were rather unwieldy with its boxy dimensions and rather strange front grilles - massive wooden structures imparting the high frequencies - or so we thought. According to the sales people at Tripletone they only improved the dispersion of the higher tones.

The Tripletone amplifiers might well have struck a note with the present-day hi-fi gurus. They were mainly hand-built with a good eye for details, and good-tolerance components.

They were not powerful "on the paper", but might stand up well in real life as power supplies were totally separated for each stereo channel.

The Gemini (top) was rated at 2x5 watts in 8 ohms. Not very impressive. Tone controls were very flexible, though. Dual-concentric - midrange control, too.

The Major was a 10 watts (8 ohm) mono amplifier.

Stereo 8 + 8 had its name from its 16 ohms rating. In 8 ohm it yielded 2x10 watts. Distortion and noise figures were rather good at that time - less than 0.2% at rated power

In the beginning of the sixties Tripletone manufactured some nice tube amplifiers. Present-day hi-fi gurus would have loved them!

Of course these are mono amps. The Major - integrated amp. with inputs for phono, tuner and tape. Tape out, too. Power rating: 12 watts into 8 ohms. Power tubes were EL84's.

Likewise, a pure power amp - DP12. Same output stage as the Major. Simple constructions like this cost an arm and a leg today.

Not many factories make their own speaker drivers. Tripletone did. They had two models in their range - an 8 in. and a 10 in. They were "dual-cones", in that one concentric speaker should cover the complete frequency range, using two concentrically placed cones. It was said to reach up to 17 khz - give or take a little. In our time they had added a 4 in. tweeter to this in their Concerto cabinet - more to cater for an "unnecessary" wish from the customers - than anything else. One driver was too simple!
