I do not see Christ as far and removed from us. Neither do I see the Father as removed from us. Jesus's death on the cross was both love and atonement for sins we could never pay for. I believe in progressive revelation but not in the way you speak. Progressive revelation is the unfolding of God's plan for the redemption of humanity since their fall. Even in the garden God provided a covering for Adam and Eve's sin (clothes). The Bible works its way progressively revealing more and more about God and his plan to send his son, Jesus as an atonement of sin. True love only comes from God and without him there can be no love. There are actions that look like love but are not because they come from selfish motives. Someone who does not know God cannot really love.
