LoMoClipse
it was a cloudy day on august 11th. in the morning it was bright but then these clouds came up.
the city of graz was lucky to be sited in the deepest shadow on the line of the total eclipse
over europe that day. the first total since 1848 in austria i think. these special sunshades had
been sold out days before. and the city was crowded, many came travelling from italy
or germany.
i had no real plan where to go to watch, if i should climb a hill near my place or walk the city.
then the choice was quite easy as i came across the place at the main station - lot of people sitting
around with their silly glasses, staring at the sky, what a lomo theme :) - but not too much people,
like it was on the schlossberg (castle hill in the centre of town), there one could not even move.
i knew the LC-A would not be the best suitable tool to take pictures of the sun, so i decided
to focus on people. armed with 400ASA, walking around the place and pointing at people was a pure
pleasure for they did not even notice me :) - in fact, with the shades on you are totally blind.
finally i ended up sitting on the lawn and positioning the tripod (at least i had to try it!).
ah yes, i also carried my super 8 camera with me and shot some metres. - and a lot of single frames
(good cam hehee) - most zoomed 80mm on people and such. a guy was curious about what i was doing
as he saw me pointing the camera everywhere, zooming, focussing but not really takung a movie.
i wonder if he was aware of the photo i shot with him and his friends just before he came over to ask ;).
this was my first cartridge and i am not quite certain
if this small film format can be really used for photographing. let's hope the best. i will try to scan
the resolts if possible (somebody got a good positives scanner? - should be 1500dpi as the actual
image is less tham 7.5mm wide)
some of the images on this page show a direct view of the sun. they were all made from the tripod
with the LOMO in "auto" setting (yes i'd better use some manual diafragm with the total eclipse, i know).
that's why the totality looks quite bright (two pictures that are more bright). - the cloud also does
its job. but i was very lucky in my location. at exactly the right time the clouds opened up (god, these
clouds were travelling slow!). and in the best moment i ran out of film. guessed it. the other sun- photos are
95 to 99% total coverage. pretty, though. some additional pictures may follow as soon as my next roll
is finished.
the sun was really a black circle with the corona visible, everything like predicted. 8) but nobody told
us about the beautiful big red ring around it (i'm so sorry this can not be seen on the photo).
might have been an atmospheric effect. (no, the ring you see is not what i mean, it comes from my dirty lense)
if you want even larger versions of the above images,
send me a note,
i have them double sized.
