Earlier on the President of the BFL and I had a conversation that started like the normal update and information I get from across the league. Sounds like this:"Wassup bruh?" "Nothin man just chillin," "Yeah, me to. Wassup up with you?" "Nothin man, I was just thinking about last Friday, damn! Man every time I think I got it in the bag somebody already got something new for me to D-up". "Man, I let R.L. beat me!|" "FOE Real!" "Yeah man, but he's playing good ball though, but you know who's going to be there in the end taking another trophy home". |
During the conversation we started to talk about things that brothers do outside the league, he mentioned something about adopting a family for the holidays. Turns out that Chet (BFL Dolphins), Winky White (BFL Bears), and Vince ended up doing just so in the BFL name. The BFL wives also get Big-Ups for making it a family effort. |
While at our local barbershop, Vince found out that a South West Atlanta Minister was having a charity drive for the Battered Women and Children program. A sickly woman and her five children were in desperate need of help. The children, who ranged from eight to fifteen years of age, were often bounced around back and forth to different boarding homes. |
A single parent home of four boys and one girl was living day-to-day in a motel at $65 per day. This commission of emissary's from the BFL, had three of their families get together and provided the family a little rest and requite for a moment. |
They prepared meals for the entire family, paid the rent, bought new letterman coats (the good wool and leather kind) and toys for the everyone. The love and gifts were well received, graciously and tearfully from a weary mother who by being hospitalized so much could hardly work to keep her and her family from starving. |
While talking to this courageous mother she described how hard it was being in her position and how much she appreciated the lift it gave her to know that we are still here when we need to be. The children also had a time to just be kids, and for a brief moment playing with remote control cars, race track sets, dolls and charms they may have thought this just might be the best Christmas eve this family has ever experienced. |
I thought to myself it's time to get back in the loop and do some things like this, things I can be proud to have done for my community, the same community I thought would never change, because there are so many people in so much more need of help, I have to do something. |
