Tank
In 1977, Atari released Tank as a stand alone home game. Tank was based on the 1974 arcade game of the
same name. The arcade version of Tank was the first non-Pong game released by Kee Games, a subsidiary
of Atari. Tank was a huge hit in the arcade and was eventually released under the Atari name as well,
when Atari and Kee Games officially "merged." It should be noted that Kee Games was dreamed up by
Atari founder Nolan Bushnell as a way to get around the exclusive contracts Atari had signed with
distributors.
Details about the home version of Tank are scarce, but I believe it had
a pair of tank-like controls, similar to those later used on the Battlezone arcade game. If anyone
has a picture of the home version of Tank, please email me at tcervo@slip.net.
The scarcity of Tank is most likely due to it being one of the last stand alone consoles produced before
the VCS (2600) took off later the same year. The VCS (2600)
had the pack-in cartridge Combat, which was essentially Tank and its variations.
