Touch Me
In June 1974, Atari released an arcade game that was very different from their current hits like Pong
and World Cup Football. The name of the game was Touch Me, which consisted of four giant colored buttons.
The game would randomly light up the buttons, and the player had to recreate the sequence. Touch Me
was a failure in the arcades and quickly disappeared.
Three years later, Milton Bradley would release a tabletop home version
of Touch Me called Simon. Simon became one of the hottest selling items of the 1977 holiday season, and
spawned a host of similar games from other manufacturers.
Due to the success of Simon, Atari decided to re-introduce Touch Me as
a hand-held game in 1978. The new Touch Me was roughly the size of a hand-held calculator and played
the same three games as Simon. At the time, some people said that Touch Me was just another, smaller, Simon
clone. In fact, Simon was nothing more than a Touch Me arcade clone for the home.
