Some Readers' Letters

Since the launching of the VMC I've received a lot of mail regarding the site. Here's a selection of them... Send your comments in too!

Dear Keith,

After reading your announcement on one of the recent "Classic Macs Mailing List's" digests tonight, I just visited your brand new TVMC and, under the impression of this wonderful website i just have to write. Thank You! Being a huge vintage mac fan and collector myself, I've been looking for a site just like yours for quite some time -- and TVMC is exactly what i had hoped to find some day.

In my not-so-humble opinion, among all the other websites dedicated to classic mac models in one way or another, yours is the first and only one so far, to breathe the "original vintage Mac" spirit both in terms of overall content and web design. Navigation and the slim graphics are excellent -- a very tasteful tribute to the simple and easy-to-use original mac GUI ( ... and I can hardly wait to view the forthcoming b/w version using navigator 2 on my SE/30!).

My words might seem a bit overenthusiastic here, but then again I'm really glad to have found a website of someone who not only collects vintage Macs himself, but also shares the interest in b/w 1-bit graphics made on these machines. You wrote that it's about time for a revival of 1-bit artwork and I couldn't agree more.

What I like most about using vintage compact macs (well, with the exception of the sheer shape of them) is the fact that you still can get some actual work done on those charming little cubes. I use mine for writing, printing or faxing letters, for accessing compuserve and for creating 1 bit artwork, among other tasks.

To me, in addition to that, it's simply a good feeling to be somewhat beyond today's hype about "bigger, better and faster" computers; to be able to do my thing safe (vintage Macs hardly ever crash), fast and easy -- beyond the hysteria about the latest technical gimmicks, requiring always the latest software versions, running exclusively on the latest hardware and so on. call it minimalism ...

I'm looking very much forward to future updates of your TVMC website and wish you success - keep up the good work!

Best regards,

F.B.

Keith,

I just tried to go to your vintage macintosh club site, as announced in the classic Mac digest. I must say it's very bad. The frames format is very ill-chosen for a vintage Mac site: most of the vintage Mac users run older versions of browsers, and won't be able to visit. I for one was greeted with a stinkin' pop up (empty) window and, as I chose to try the frames, got stuck with those detestable "javaScript errors" windows.

I think you'll have to rethink your strategy.....I run Netscape 2.02 on a Powerbook 145b, system 7.1.

Nice looking and friendly site on compact b&w Macs, but so many of them have only 4MB RAM, they can't do frames.

If only Geocities wouldn't keep popping up that idiot banner....

Hi Kieth,

Saw your post to the classic list and checked out your site. It looks very promising but some of the java frame redirect calls are not working :-(

Keith,

I was looking forward to another Classic Mac resource when I sought out your site. At the first page, mac.html, one is immediately annoyed with the Geocities javascript window. There is no apparent path to noframe pages, though, we are to click to "proceed with frames". Then, the javascript festival begins. It is a pity to have your artfully designed site reduced to a daughter window. The links to Finder, MacTalk, etc., are only available in the top frame! not in the main frame body! How are those of us surfing with classic macs to enjoy this site? You've done a good thing while eliminating many of the very people you are most likely to serve there. Please reconsider your use of so much javascript noise and your neglect of the 68000 mac users.

I hope you will accept these criticisms in the spirit I have offered them. I really would like to see your site in a full browser window without all the JS bells and whistles that do not support your work well. Look at http://www.zdnet.com/products/htmluser/garage.html for many tutorials and tips which, while below your capabilities, offer guidelines for effective site development concepts.

Good luck.

R.
