Stuffit Expander
I wish that I could provide a hot link to download Stuffit Expander. Unfortunately this is a catch-22 (or chicken and egg) situation. The fact is, almost everything on ftp sites is encoded, even Stuffit Expander. In other words, I could provide a hot link so you could download Stuffit Expander, but you couldn't decode it (which would be useless). What most people do is to get it from a friend. Aladdin Systems doesn't like that (although it's shareware and therefore legal), but I don't know what else they want you to do. Here's my solution -- I found a self-expanding version of a program called Fetch in an old subdirectory at Cornell University's ftp site. Here's a hot link:
Once you have downloaded that, simply double-click on it to expand it. The you can use Fetch to download Stuffit Expander 4.0 from on of the following ftp sites. In case you are wondering, this will work because Fetch automatically decodes both binhex and binary encoding. Here are are three different places to get it from. All six files here are identical, except that some are encoded in binary and some in binhex. Here they are:

You are probably wondering what you should use for a user id/username and a password. There is a way to login as a guest. Use "ftp" (leave off the quotes if you want it to work!) as the user id/username, and your e-mail address as the password. You should specify the directory as what it says above, except leave off the address and the filename. Here are some examples of what to put in each field:
Host: ftp.aladdinsys.com
User ID: ftp
Password: ****************** (That says 'nobody@nowhere.edu')
Directory: /pub
Host: ftp.scruz.net
User ID: ftp
Password: ****************** (That says 'nobody@nowhere.edu')
Directory: /users/aladdin/public
Host: amug.org
User ID: ftp
Password: ****************** (That says 'nobody@nowhere.edu')
Directory: /pub/contrib/aladdin
Once you have downloaded it, double-click on the installer icon to install Stuffit Expander. That was almost as simple as a hot link, now wasn't it?
