Turn 5

Two Ways
14/9/99

---Backpost: Turn 4 ---

The Halfling raised one hand and his two companions stopped still. Urkan and the Elf, their heads bent against the wind collided with them before they stopped. The Student, staggering slowly behind, stopped, and crumpled to the floor as his muscles gave way. The Initiate fell, but the Mercenary caught him and held him upright. The Halfling turned.

"It’s hard to see exactly what’s happened here - the snow’s still falling, after all, but it looks like there was a fight or something just up ahead."

---Turn 5---

Squinting through the flowing snow, the Labourer stared ahead into the blizzard. "I can’t see..." he murmured, before hefting his axe again and looking back at Urkan. "Who would be this far out?" he queried, glancing around the group. "Want us to check it out?" he asked, before turning his head back to face in front of them, and adding quickly, "There might be injuries.." Urkan glanced down at Mund, then briefly over his shoulder at the trailing three. The Mercenary gave him a helpless half-shrug.

The Soldier looked to the others and agreed with the Labourer. "We three should move forward and check it out quickly. We will report back shortly."

"Agreed," replied Urkan. "You three push on a hundred paces. If it’s clear, you" - he nods towards the Labourer - "you leave them two there while you come back and move us up, then you three push on again. We’ll caterpillar our way clear of these tracks, then make best speed to Tents. If it’s not clear… Well, no heroics. Give us some warning, okay?" The Labourer and his Halfling companion nodded and faded into the night. The Soldier paused.

"Keep warm." Urkan grinned and shoved him after the others.

The Initiate forced himself to get up again, out of the snow, and to shake as much snow from his robes as he could. He walked round in small circles to keep warm. No longer worried about being ready to fight, he tucked the sword under one arm and crossed his arms within the voluminous sleeves of his robe, trying to keep his fingers from freezing. The Elf watched him drunkenly trudge round.

"At this point, I don't care what's up ahead" he said quietly, to no-one in particular. "If we don't get to shelter soon we're going to freeze to death." Lowering the make-shift stretcher to the ground, he wrapped thin arms around himself and watched the snow fall from the shelter of his cavernous hood.
