Name:

Allen

Nicknames:

Polar Bear - Given to me from Aiyin. She was always in complete shock to see me wear shorts and sandals when the weather went below 20 degrees C.

Cyclone - My own given name. This one's a bit older that I used for screen names and other things relating to martial arts.

"Jackie" - This nickname was thrown onto me from the guys in the Chinese Martial Arts Association at Cornell. It was given to me because of my semi-acrobatic abilities as well as my stupidity of standing upside-down on a pole and nearly skewering myself.

Asian Pacific

Cornell University

Major & Concentration:

Electrical Engineering and Electro-Magnetics / Microwave stuff. Yeah, go figure

Hobbies:

Martial Arts - Ever since I was little, I have always enjoyed watching fighting flicks. My first was Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection. After watching him, I started learning basic Wushu at the age of 11. I stuck with that for about 2-3 years before stopping. It wasn't until 8th grade that I started Tae Kwon Do and continued that till I got my black belt, right before coming into Cornell. Along with that, I found a Mantis school in Flushing, Queens and began my trainning there in my junior year of high school. Unfortunately I only got in 1.5 years of that before leaving for school. I've competed a few times and won about 4 first place trophies. As mentioned elsewhere, I am currently the head of the Chinese Martial Arts Association at Cornell, but I am always open to learning more. And of course, watching martial art flicks is also considered a hobby of mine.

Violin - Yeah, being your typical asian american, I was introduced to the violin (and piano for that matter) at a very early age. By now I've played for about 12 effective years. I say effective because I really don't get many opportunities to practice that much. But I still have my rep with my teacher, only student who was crazy for Paganini.

Favorites:

Music:

Well, due to my early introduction to the violin and piano, I never knew anything else but classical at first. Then of course there is always the stuff thats on the radio, but I never knew the names of the songs or groups, just listened. After college for a year or two, I'm now updated on all the latest pop songs, techno, swing and latino music, the works. I took a ballroom dancing p.e. which constitutes my swing and latino and the rest, chinese pop, techno / dance, etc etc was from friends. So I basically listen to whatever except for rap, heavy metal and country.

Sports:

I'm a general athlete that'll play just about anything and do just about whatever. My favorite ball sport is probably volleyball. I picked up volleyball in elementary school; I used to tag along with my sister and her friends all the time and they were all fairly serious and excellent players so of course when I came with them, they taught me all the tricks to the game.

My favorite raquet sports would be ping pong and badminton. These were two things I picked up on my own during free time in high school. Badminton was more from our gym class and I would just play a lot but ping pong was something I was always exposed to since kindergarden. As always, our church had a table and the older guys at that time enjoyed crushing us younger kids. But as a result, constantly played better people, you tend to learn all their tricks and become up to level.
